Welcome to Master Your Money, budgeting, saving, and debt-free living. I'm your host, Nate Tanner. On this show, we use the Trigator Triangle, budget, save, and pay off debt to help you build a spending plan that fits your life, grow your savings with purpose, and knock out debt with confidence. Ever feel like your subscriptions are multiplying faster than weeds in a garden? One day it's a streaming service, then a fitness app, then a box of snacks that you forgot that you signed up for. Before you know it, your financial garden is crowded and some of those plants aren't producing much. Here's the truth, every dollar you earn is a seed with incredible potential. When planted with purpose, it can grow into something beautiful or fruitful.

Some spending blooms like flowers, bringing joy and color to your life. Some spending acts like vegetables, feeding your goals and creating long-term value. But weeds, they steal nutrients and space from what really matters. And just like you can't plant tomatoes and expect strawberries, you can't spend without intention and hope for financial freedom. Anything outside of true needs should either bloom with joy or produce a harvest of progress. They should never choke your garden like a weed. Today, we're going to learn how to prune the weeds, nurture what matters, and make sure every dollar you plant grows towards your dreams. We'll talk about running of joy versus value filter on your subscriptions, negotiating or swapping for better deals, and creating a purpose plan that turns recurring expenses into progress, not guilt.

If you've ever wondered whether that $9.99 charge is worth it or what else the money could do for your future, you're in the right place. Grab your gloves because we're about to do some financial gardening. Let's get into it. The joy versus value filter. If your subscriptions were guests at a party, who's bringing the fun and who's just eating the snacks? That's the question we're asking today, because when it comes to recurring expenses, not every guest deserves a permanent invite. Let me share with you one of my favorite subscription stories. If you're new to the podcast, this one, it's a classic. Back in the 90s, there was an entertaining wrestler named Diamond Dallas Page, or DDP for short. In the early 2010s, my brother told me DDP had released a workout program called DDP Yoga.
Nate Tanner 2:48
My brother gave it rave reviews, and since it was from a pro wrestler, it had a manly aura that felt like something that I could stick with. I mean, DDP was famous for the diamond cutter. After about a week, I was all in, highly motivated, ready to transform. But then the old, I really need to finish cleaning the garage, I'll do DDP yoga later, started to creep in. And well, I never did another workout. Here's the worst part, that subscription kept getting paid for six months. No joy, no value. It was a weed in my financial garden, stealing nutrients from what really mattered. Why joy and value matter. Here's the truth. Every dollar you earn has tremendous potential. Spent wisely, it can create joy and enrich your life.

Invested wisely, it can grow exponentially and build long-term wealth. But when dollars drift into subscriptions that don't serve a purpose, they become weeds in your financial garden, stealing vital nutrients from what really matters. So how do we decide what stays and what goes? Enter the joy versus value filter. defining joy joy is about enrichment not excess it's the streaming service that brings family movie nights the audio app that sparks creativity the fitness platform that keeps you moving joyful spending adds color to your life without sabotaging your financial goals Defining value. Value is about potential. Every dollar has power. When invested, it compounds. When spent with intention, it supports progress.

A subscription that saves you time, helps you earn more, or improves your health? That's value. But here's the key. Joy and value must bring that dollar to its full potential and align with your goals and values.
