Hello, James. How are you? Good, good, good.
Yeah, I have my bins are outside my back window or my bedroom window about three or four yards away and they're beside me. They're beside a shed, a garden shed. So about one o'clock in the morning, about a week ago, I could hear something at the bins and the lid of the bin was lifting up and down. So I didn't know what it was. I thought it might be a cat or something. So I went out and it was dark and I didn't see anything. So I thought no more of it. So the next morning at six o'clock, I could hear the same thing. It was a very bright, sunny morning. So I just, I opened the bedroom curtain and just looked out and I could see something over in the bin, eating something. And I thought it might be just, I didn't know what it was, a small fox or something, but I had my phone with me.
So I put the camera on and zoomed in on it and I could see that it was something, it looked like a stoat to me or something like that. So it was eating what looked like something out of the bin, looked like chicken I had put in. So as soon as I turned off the camera and as I stayed looking at it, I could see that it, It had lifted the two bins side by side, the blue bin, which is the recycling bin, and the green bin, which is everything goes into it. So it lifted the green bin with its paw and jumped in and took some food out and jumped up on the blue bin and started eating away at it. It was looking around it, but it wasn't disturbed. But I could see as well that when it jumped down, the way it got up to the bins was it climbed up along the side of the shed, just climbed up itself.
So I turned off the camera and went out and obviously ran away when I went out, but... I googled it then and it turned out that it was a pine marten. So I had the video, so I just sent it to your stats just to see.
And it's a great video and a very healthy looking pine marten. And is it the first time you've had a pine marten to the best of your knowledge in your garden?
Yeah, yeah. I haven't seen anything like that before. And I've never, like I did, it was very loud the way the bin was lifting up and down. So I hadn't heard that before. So I assume now it's a very good weather and it's a very bright weather and Even the night before, it was barely getting dark. It would have been about the 18th or 19th of June. So unless that had been consumable, maybe it had young. I was reading about it then. Maybe it had young close by.
Yeah, because this is in broad daylight, pretty much, this video, isn't it? I mean, it's very clear to see what it is, ain't it?
I'm just thinking, where in Ireland are you that the green bin is the general bin and the blue bin is the recycling bin? You know, the green bin generally is for recycling material. Where have they got their colour coordination so wrong? Where are you seeing all this?
Yeah, well, I'm in Monaghan and the green bin is for all the different types of stuff and the blue bin is just recycling stuff. And it was only a couple of weeks ago we got the little brown bin that you put your food and stuff into. But I had put a carcass of a chicken, of a cooked roast chicken in the main bin because it was so smelly and I hadn't put it in the small brown bin. It wouldn't have fitted anyway. So I assume that's the scent that the Pine Martin got that he came and raided the bin.
Yeah, absolutely indeed. Why didn't you eat your chicken instead of throwing it out half eaten anyway or boil it up for soup?

Anyhow, it was great to see. It was great to see a pine martin. And even if it was feeding young, it was probably feeding herself and then she'd have milk for the young and that. And this is very true. Pine martins are really well able to lift up the lids. In fact, other people have sent in videos over the year where the pine martin went into the bin altogether and the lid closed down on top of it.
