The Supreme Court has restored the Trump administration's expanded system for checking voter citizenship against federal records, allowing states to resume sweeping voter verification using social security numbers and immigration data. The administration says the system helps prevent non citizens from voting, while critics warn that unreliable records have wrongly flagged eligible citizens and led to canceled registrations.
Rolling blocks a lower court order that halted the system, with the court's six conservative justices in the majority and the three liberal justices dissenting. The decision comes ahead of November's midterm elections as Republicans seek to maintain control of Congress.
