What are the key market moves and new tariffs announced by President Trump?

Phil Dobbie 0:01
So he's taxing on the way in now, he's starting to tax on the way out as well, yet more tariffs from Trump, but the can has been kicked down the road over China's tariffs. And tonight US CPI, the RBA before that as well. It's Tuesday, it's the twelfth of August twenty twenty five. It's the morning call from Nap. Good morning. Well, US equities are gliding down today, half percent off the Dow, with the S P closing down a quarter percent, the Nasdaq has lost naught point three percent, with the Russell two thousand only just in the red at the close in New York. The Eurostocks fifty also closed down naught point three percent, but the FTSE one hundred is up naught point four percent at the close this morning.
Phil Dobbie 0:40
Uh ten year guilt yields are down four basis points, but elsewhere well bonds. Movements have been very limited, just one basis point lower for 10-year treasuries, for example. German Bundes are up one basis point. Aussie 10 years, well, they finished yesterday at 4.24%. Now on futures, they are up four basis points, so closer to 4.28%. The US dollar is up 0.4% on the DXY, the Aussie down just 0.2% to 65.1 US cents. The euro, though, that's down 0.3%. The Swiss franc. Ranked down over half a percent. Bitcoin got over 122.3 thousand uh in this session before falling back below one hundred and twenty. And oil has jumped into action in the last hour or so after a fairly laxadaisical session, it's fair to say.
Phil Dobbie 1:23
Now WTI is up 0.4%, Brent is up 0.3% to 66.80 a barrel, and Comics Gold is down two and a half percent after President Trump confirmed that the There won't be tariffs on gold, although the move down, it's fair to say, was happening before he posted the news on Truth Social, and then it just continued to glide lower. Uh here's an absolute old. Let's talk about that first of all. I mean it would have been confusing, wouldn't it, for gold, which is primarily a financial asset, let's be honest, uh, to be treated the same as other commodities.

How are recent tariffs influencing oil and gold price dynamics?

Phil Dobbie 1:54
So perhaps no surprise that the US President relented on this, uh, but and it certainly looks like everyone was expecting it, which is why prices uh w oil prices were going down and they continued before and after that announcement.
Sally Auld 2:05
Yeah, good morning, Phil. I think that's right. So uh i it it was a bit confusing for a while there, but uh that that seems to have righted itself and as you said, the market I think was was probably under the expectation that um that's the way things were likely to pan out. So not a not a huge reaction uh in in the gold market.
Phil Dobbie 2:25
No, and not a lot going on with oil either, despite, you know, the concerns about what uh the US President is going to agree to when he meets with Putin in Alaska on Friday over Ukraine, you know, he says he will try and get back territory for Ukraine, but there's fears he's gonna go the other way. And then we've got Zelensky basically saying, you know, Russia is uh is just buying time and it is busy moving more troops to the Russian border ready for a fresh offense. After this uh this meeting on Friday. So something's gonna happen here, isn't it?
Sally Auld 2:54
Yeah. Although although it does feel like you said the atmospheric sort of suggests that maybe um you know we're we're not gonna get something that resembles uh you know, a proper peace deal. So uh the Ukrainian uh side has basically said they don't want to cede any territory and uh, you know, even some of the rhetoric from Trump overnight suggests that maybe he's sort of walking back a little bit from um the objective of actually getting a a peace deal and and he's sort of now starting to frame the discussions as, you know, more as a just a a broader chat around, you know, what might be possible in the future. So I think um there's a bit of expectations management going on at the moment about, you know, how much we can realistically expect uh to to be achieved on on Friday, but I guess, you know, it's uh still got the full week to to
Sally Auld 3:42
Run almost, so we'll see what happens between now and then. Yeah. This
Phil Dobbie 3:45
will war ramp up as a as a consequence of it.
