Why is the US dollar weakening and yields falling today?

Phil Dobbie 0:01
Well, a weaker dollar, falling yields. It seems like a bit of a reversal, but how much of that is down to the Bessent factor? Are markets satisfied the economy in the US could be in safe hands with the new Treasury chief? And are they right in that? Plus, oil down on Israel Hezbollah ceasefire hopes, but maybe a little bit too early to tell on that. And New Zealand retail sales down more than expected. That surely firms up at least a 50 basis. Point cut this week from the RBNZ. It's Tuesday, it's the twenty sixth of November 2024. It's the morning call from NAB. Good morning. Well, for a change the US dollar is down. It's lost naught point seven percent on the DXY. The euro meanwhile up naught point seven percent.
Phil Dobbie 0:42
The pound is up naught point three percent. The Japanese yen is up naught point four percent as well, but the Aussie is flat at sixty five US cents. Yields are much lower as well. Ten year treasuries down thirteen basis points to four point two eight percent, down ten in Canada, down four in the UK and three in Germany. Aussie ten years years down six basis points yesterday to four point four eight percent now on futures down another four basis points this morning. On the share market, a sea of green in the US. Uh so at the close, up one percent for the Dow, not point three percent for the S P and the Nasdaq. The Russell two thousand is up almost one and a half percent. In Europe a quarter percent rise in the Eurostocks fifty at close, not point four percent for the FTSE one hundred and
Phil Dobbie 1:25
And the DAX and big falls in oil. Three percent lower for WTI and Brent down two point seven percent to just over seventy three a barrel. Uh so why are bond prices rising alongside equities? Why have we seen all of a sudden this turnaround in the US dollar? Here's Nabs Rodrigo Catrill. A lot of people seem to be saying it's the uh Scott Besson factor.

How is Scott Besson’s “safe‑hands” Treasury outlook moving markets?

Phil Dobbie 1:47
He's seen as the uh the safe pair of hands to to to lead the treasury because he comes from the finance industry. Is that really what's driving all these moves today, do you think?
Rodrigo Catril 1:56
Um Morningfield. Uh y well there it's certainly a a big component of it. Um he's been regarded as, if you like, uh an orthodox choice, uh which, you know, if you remember there's been a few unorthodox ones uh in terms of the nominations. So in that sense it's um it's been uh, you know, positive. At at the same time he Um, and I think you guys mentioned it yesterday. He's given a couple of interviews, but the one in the Wall Street Journal he talked about this sort of uh gradualism approach to um to to terrorists it was sort of more willing to negotiate and put it as a uh as a proposal if you like, it rather than put the tariffs first and then uh bring uh others to the table.
Phil Dobbie 2:37
Yeah, 'cause he didn't want to spook the markets is basically what he's saying. So he sees it as a a layered mechanism. But m as you say, more of a negotiating tool than perhaps an outright uh count blanche move.
Rodrigo Catril 2:48
Yes, and and because of this sort of orthodox approach, it's also kind of being regarded as maybe he will be a a voice of reason uh in terms of some of the policies that uh can be inflationary, uh like for instance the issue around immigration, um and obviously even the tariffs themselves. Uh uh so having him uh uh on on the side suggesting maybe a a more easy approach would be advisable. Um Now that uh in terms of the positives, you know, uh Bis Bicens has also been known of uh p that he pitched the three the three threes policy approach. Cutting that in the budget by three percent, boosting GDP growth to three percent and encourag encouraging big oil to produce an additional three million barrels.
Rodrigo Catril 3:30
So so those are the kind of the big um headlines. Now to us the the one that is interesting is that he is also um has spelled out or you know agreed and supported this idea of creating a shadow fair shadow chair of the central bank, which obviously it is concerning. So that's another one to just to watch on the on the sidelines that in addition to all these sort of nice things Um, he's not that uh against this idea of putting pressure on the Feds independence.
