Is AI currently creating new jobs or just reshaping existing roles?
We know artificial intelligence is said to change the shape of work, doing more of what we do whilst we try and figure out what we do with our time. But in the short term, is AI actually creating jobs as we need to build it? Companies need to adapt to how to use it. And there are new jobs emerging, which are specifically AI, that are jobs that never existed before. And it's changing the skill set required for jobs across many sectors. So more jobs. or different jobs. Today we look at Seeks AI Gauge with a report out next week. Let's have a look at it. The morning call from NAB with Phil Dobby. The Weekend Edition. Well, we've heard a lot lately about the impact of AI on the jobs market. Dario Amodi, the CEO of Anthropic, said it could displace 50% of all entry-level white-collared jobs within five years.
Worse yet, Mustafa Sullivan from Microsoft AI has said that most uh white-collared tasks in law, in marketing, and project management will be fully automated by AI within 12 to 18 months. And Sam Altman from OpenAI. Is saying that entire job categories could disappear. So that's the downside. What about the upside? Jobs that are emerging because of AI. Seek say the number of job ads featuring the term is growing in recent years, and they've just put together the Seek AI gauge with a report written by their senior economist, Dr. Blair Chapman. So Blair is with me today. So just how big is this? shift to jobs that look for AI knowledge and and AI skills. I mean a lot of them still are in the uh IT sector, aren't they?
Yes, it it definitely is still confined to the tech space. We've seen a relatively constant increase over the decade pre COVID through COVID. It was increasing and then it did uh stall the demand for those AI skills uh in about twenty two, twenty three. You know. Coinciding with the release of Chat GPT, but also a bit of a broader slowdown in employment growth in Australia. And then in the last year or so we've really seen uh uptick in the demand for AI related skills and really has shot up and it's been a broadening of the demand. So it's burst out of just the IT sector, which is where it was contained. But it's still a really relatively small amount of our ads asking for those AI related skills only
Right, so far, but I think that could well change. But it's and it's interesting that it's broadening. I wonder how many in the tech space are jobs where AI has just been added because it makes sense. So if you were a data analyst, for example, or a job where in the past you might have said, you know, you m you m you know, understanding of machine learning skills, uh that has just evolved to saying yes, you need to you need to understand or have experience with AI.
I think that's definitely the case. So you You know, looking at our job ads in twenty sixteen, uh very much the similar sort of roles of data analysts would have featured the words big data um and things like that. And now it's very much that's been replaced with AI and those LLM uh related languages and more around neural networks and computer vision and all of those technical terms uh have come to the fore. Whereas, you know, in the past it might have just been big data in the IT sector. And as you mentioned, uh it's creating new roles. So uh some funny titles, so AI guru. Um, I'm not even sure what that is. Uh the job description wasn't great.
So yeah, sounds like they don't know. We just need someone who understands AI and we'll call them a guru so they feel good about it.
Yeah, but then we're seeing obviously uh AI ethics roles are really shot up over the last year or so. So I think uh it's something that's gonna be in demand while everyone's building up their AI capacity. You need that responsible AI thinker or AI ethics within the business. But it you know, a business doesn't need a lot of those. So it's sort of once you've got it, that growth will probably fade away. But I think Uh AI transformation, another one that's really big at the moment. We've seen a lot of build-up of that. But again, how many AI transformation leads are you going to need in the future?
