What is the timeline and significance of Donald Trump's 8 PM deadline on the Strait of Hormuz?

Phil Dobbie 0:00
Well the deadline is ten or eleven o'clock this morning, Eastern Australia time. Any hope of a last minute resolution seems unlikely. So does Donald Trump start bombing civilian infrastructure in Iran? Or does he back down on the threat? After all, it is a war crime. Markets are not pricing anything too radical, it seems. It's Wednesday, it's the eighth of April, twenty twenty six. It's the morning call from Nab. Good morning. Well the big move in oil today is actually WTI, which is up over one percent. It reached almost a hundred and eighteen today, close to its recent highs. Brent though down a little, but it did get close to a hundred and twelve a barrel. US shares are lower, not point four percent off the S P, not point six percent down for the Nasdaq, the Eurostocks fifty and the DAX down one percent.
Phil Dobbie 0:44
The VIX index has been climbing this session, peaking over twenty seven earlier. The US dollar is down. About 0.2% to 99.8% on the DXY. The Aussie, even at a time of high risk like this, is up 0.6% to 69.6 US cents, getting close to bridging that 70 cent mark. And bond yields are higher, just one basis point for 10-year treasuries. Uh but up nine in France, 12 in Italy, 7 in the UK. Aussie 10 years. We're down five basis points yesterday to 4.98% this morning, though. Futures back up over five percent. So he is an abs gaving friend. So will he or won't he? That is the question, isn't it?

How are global oil prices reacting to the Middle‑East tensions and recent strikes?

Phil Dobbie 1:22
Uh it sounds as though hopes of a a some sort of peace talk uh have taken a bit of a back seat for now. Donald Trump's truth social post overnight a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, he said, but it probably will, and his deadline is eight. eight PM Eastern time in the United States. That's ten or eleven this morning on the east coast of Australia. But they've already uh attacked Karg Island and the Israeli military has also struck a petrochemical compound in Shiraz in southern Iran. But today at least, I mean, markets are fairly sanguine about all this, almost as though they're not expecting that this is gonna happen.
Gavin Friend 2:03
Mm. Morning, Phil. Yeah. So the world is once again on tender hooks as the clock counts down, as you say, to just a few hours time to this decision. Um and and we've seen over the last twenty four hours the US, you know, increasing, you know, along with Israel, the attacks, uh, as you mentioned on Carg Island, uh, not on um s civilian targets, but on military targets, it has to be said. Uh Because we know that Iran has threatened uh to to sort of rain chaos in the region if that were to happen. Um but y you're right. Um, you know, markets have been kind of sanguine about this. Again, this plays to that long run line about whether, you know, they they can't believe really we're gonna go it's a it's a binary outcome, but but but the the the odds are that we're gonna get some kind of extension, maybe a deal.
Gavin Friend 2:51
Um you have To say in the last 24 hours, the rhetoric has really ramped up. The US, you know, the the the escalate to de escalate uh stance of Donald Trump has really gone into overdrive. You mentioned the very dire warning uh about civilization there, uh you know, which nobody wanted to see. And certainly when we came in in Europe uh Tuesday, markets were looking a bit more optimistic, equity. We're in the green. You know, you got a few of those comments. That sort of bellico's rhetoric and everything turned south pretty quickly.

What do the latest market indices (WTI, Brent, VIX, USD, Aussie) indicate about investor sentiment?

Gavin Friend 3:25
But then it kind of, you know, ground its way back again. And we've had sort of lots of on off kind of comments throughout the day. It's true that sort of Iran has pushed back on some of this stuff. There were rumors or reports in the media later denied that. um Iran had ceased any kind of conversations with the US, you know, via the intermediaries or whatever, uh, because of these comments from from Donald Trump. As I say, that was later denied. Um all the way through this, we've seen with with President Trump, and we saw with uh his VP, J.D. Bance, on Tuesday, an idea that, you know, they they they remain optimistic of some kind of deal that that that that Iran wants
