The high Swiss Alps in the springtime of 1921, in a valley nestled between the blue, snow-dusted peaks. There is a curl of steam rising. A steam train is winding its way through the mountains. And from out of her carriage window, Miss Letitia Keene is determined to take in every detail of the spectacular landscape unfolding on the other side of the pane. She observes the snow still settled on the highest parts of the mountains and, lower down, the wildflowers that have burst into bloom on the grassy slopes. She notes gentian edelweiss and alpine roses in shades of pink and white.
She peers down with a thrill whenever the train crosses one of the alpine wooden bridges that span deep gorges where rushing waters brim with bright blue snowmelt.
