It was very exciting, though my teacher wasn't very impressed. Or my favourite, hanging out of the doors of trains travelling the length and breadth of India. Caution, do keep all limbs in the vehicle at all times. There's something magical about sitting back, hearing the clack of the tracks, and watching the world just roll by. Tonight, we'll board a train traveling from Venice to Paris in the year 1920. Amateur detective Letitia Keene will solve a puzzling mystery involving a diamond necklace, a duplicitous magician, and a Persian cat. Our story starts in the Doge's Palace in Venice, beneath Tintoretto's massive oil painting Il Paradiso, which takes up an entire wall of the Hall of the Great Council.
Do you see a woman standing alone, among the smartly dressed crowds that crane their necks to admire the host of cherubim and seraphim that populate Tintoretto's masterwork? No, not that woman. Not the one in the bright purple gown, dripping elegant amethyst jewels, and wearing a hat adorned with peacock feathers. A little to her left, a little hidden by a group of talkative American tourists. She's wearing a neat tweed skirt, a matching tweed hat, and sensible walking shoes, better suited to tramping through the Lake District than to the splendor of Venice's grandest, most opulent building. Her name is Letitia Keene, retired professor turned amateur sleuth, and she is the heroine of this story.
Miss Keene, in her leather moleskin notebook, had just made a sketch of a cherub who caught her eye in the painting's bottom left corner. Now, satisfied with her brisk little drawing, she was dutifully making a note of the date and the location beneath it. But she was interrupted by someone approaching her from behind and whispering her name.
