Chapter 1: What challenges did the writer face in their early career?

0.031 - 6.442 Laura Fitzgerald

On NPR's Wildcard podcast, heavyweight host Jonathan Goldstein talks about his early years as a writer.

6.823 - 18.022 Unknown

I was writing and no one was buying what I was selling. I just couldn't get anywhere. And I just kept doing it because I felt compelled to do it like a spider spinning a web.

Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. Two people were shot and wounded by an immigration agent in Portland, Oregon today. They've been transported to local hospitals. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson called it a deeply troubling incident. The FBI says it's leading an investigation.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis yesterday has been identified as Jonathan Ross. NPR's Ximena Bustillo reports the administration says the officer has been with the agency for 10 years.

56.167 - 67.888 Kristi Noem

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says the ICE agent shot the Minneapolis woman, Renee Good, in self-defense and followed his training after she blocked federal officers with her SUV and disobeyed orders to get out of her vehicle.

67.868 - 77.017 Unknown

The very same officer who was attacked today had previously been dragged by an anti-ICE rioter who had rammed him with a car and drug him back in June.

77.237 - 94.213 Kristi Noem

Speaking in Minneapolis after the shooting, Noem also said that this wasn't the first time Jonathan Ross had found himself in a confrontation with a vehicle. Noem has said that the officer is now, quote, recovering with family. It's unclear if the officer is on leave or being investigated by the agency. Ximena Bustillo, NPR News.

94.193 - 105.76 Ryland Barton

California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom delivered his final State of the State address today, highlighting his accomplishments and criticizing the Trump administration, as CAP Radio's Laura Fitzgerald reports.

Chapter 2: What incident occurred involving an immigration agent in Portland?

126.234 - 127.356 Unknown

That is wrong.

127.505 - 145.887 Laura Fitzgerald

Newsom touted a 9% reduction in unsheltered homelessness, an $11 cap for insulin, and higher wages for fast food and health care workers. The address was the last of Newsom's tenure as California governor, ahead of the Democrats' widely expected presidential bid in 2028. For NPR News, I'm Laura Fitzgerald in Sacramento.

There's a massive blackout across Iran as anti-government protests increase. At least 20 people have been killed by security forces, NPR's Jackie Northam reports.

Iran has been gripped by demonstrations for several weeks, starting with protests over the economy, but now spreading into anger with the regime. And they're gaining steam. Social media posts from some areas of Iran show people chanting for the death of the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and pulling down statues of Iranian leaders and generals.

176.392 - 197.575 Jackie Northam

President Trump has warned that the U.S. will hit hard if Iran kills protesters, a threat that carries more weight after the U.S. attack on Venezuela. Meanwhile, exiled Iranian Crown Prince Riza Pahlavi has been urging the protesters on, but it's unclear how much support he has in the country. Jackie Northam, NPR News.

And you're listening to NPR News from Washington. France's president says a political scholar who was serving a three-year sentence in Russia and facing charges of espionage has been freed in a prisoner swap. Russia's security agency says France has released a basketball player. He was detained last June at the request of the United States for alleged involvement in computer fraud.

Some dogs can learn new words by overhearing people's conversations. As NPR's Nell Greenfield-Boyce reports, it's similar to how toddlers learn language.

232.742 - 254.273 Nell Greenfield Boyce

The dogs in this study are super learners that know the names of dozens, even hundreds of toys. Shani Dror is with the Veterinary University in Vienna and ELTE University in Budapest. She says after years of searching, researchers have only found about 45 of these gifted dogs. This is a really, really rare ability.

254.253 - 279.727 Nell Greenfield Boyce

Her team had the dog's owners talk about a brand new toy with another person while the dog was in the same room. None of the speech was directed at the dog. Nonetheless, in later tests, when owners asked the dog to retrieve this particular toy out of a pile of toys in another room, the dogs almost always grabbed the right one. When typical pet dogs were tested in the same way, they didn't get it.
