Chapter 1: What recent events led to the administrative leave of CBP officers?
Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Customs and Border Protection confirms with NPR that two officers involved in the fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Preddy in Minneapolis over the weekend are now on administrative leave. The CBP says officers shot Preddy after he resisted their efforts to detain him.
The agency's preliminary assessment contradicted the Trump administration's initial narrative that Preti, a U.S. citizen, engaged in domestic terrorism and brandished his weapon. Meanwhile, three more employees at the U.S.
Attorney's Office in Minnesota have quit the resignations, in addition to at least six prosecutors who quit earlier this month after the Justice Department pressured them in connection with an investigation of a woman killed by an ICE agent weeks before Preddy's shooting death. Here's NPR's Ryan Lucas.
The three new resignations at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Minnesota include a division chief, The departures add to the already significant exodus of veteran attorneys from the office there in recent weeks. They come as the Trump administration continues its ramped-up immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, where federal agents have shot and killed two U.S.
citizens this month, Renee Macklin Good and Alex Preddy. At least six federal prosecutors in the U.S. attorney's office there recently quit after the Justice Department pressured them to investigate Good's widow. Meanwhile, an FBI agent who tried to investigate Good's killing... resigned last week after being pressured to drop the matter. Brian Lucas, NPR News, Washington.
President Trump is threatening an attack on Iran as a fleet of U.S. ships arrive there. In a social media post this morning, he said the fleet is bigger than the one he sent to Venezuela before attacking that country and deposing its leader. Here's NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben.
Trump characterized the fleet as a massive armada and added, quote, "...like with Venezuela, it is ready, willing, and able to rapidly fulfill its mission with speed and violence if necessary." Last June, the U.S. bombed Iran nuclear enrichment facilities in what was called Operation Midnight Hammer.
Trump earlier this month already threatened to attack Iran over the government's violent crackdowns on anti-regime protesters, killing more than an estimated 6,000. The death toll is believed to be much higher, though government estimates are lower. Trump also wrote in his post he wants to negotiate a deal that would allow Iran no nuclear weapons.
He added, quote, the next attack will be far worse. Don't make that happen again. Danielle Kurtzleben, NPR News.

Chapter 2: How is the Trump administration responding to immigration enforcement issues?
The central bank has come under pressure from President Trump to cut rates further, but with inflation still elevated, the Fed is proceeding cautiously. From Washington, this is NPR News. For the first time, pure electric vehicles outsold traditional gasoline vehicles in the European Union. In the U.S., federal policy has shifted sharply against EVs.
But as NPR's Camilla Dominovsky reports, battery-powered cars are still rising globally.
Sales of pure electric vehicles were up more than 50 percent year over year. while hybrids rose just 6%, and old-fashioned gas and diesel sales dropped 20%. European automakers have been facing increasingly stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers. The fastest-growing automaker in Europe last year was China's BYD. Camilla Dominovsky, NPR News.
Never before has a woman led the worldwide Anglican communion until today. NPR's Jason DeRose reports Sarah Mullally, the current Bishop of London, is now the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Her official installation isn't until March, but Sarah Mullally legally becomes the Archbishop of Canterbury during her confirmation of election at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. She's the first woman to hold the role in the history of the Anglican Church, which began when Henry VIII. broke with Rome in the 16th century.
More conservative Anglicans, mostly in Africa, say they're unhappy with both Malali's gender and her stance on LGBTQ inclusion. Some have threatened to leave the Anglican communion over her leadership, but it's unclear how that might play out. Jason DeRose, NPR News.
Homes and other structures in a southern town in Sicily teetering on the edge of a cliff following days of heavy rainfall and a landslide. More than 1,500 people in Neshemi had to evacuate. This is NPR News.
