Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. The U.S. and Russia are just hours away from ending the last major nuclear arms control treaties between the two nations. As NPR's Jeff Brumfield reports, experts say it marks a turning point
The treaty is called New START, and it went into force 15 years ago. Rose Gottemoeller negotiated New START with the Russians. She says it was the latest in a decades-long effort to reduce the number of nuclear weapons each side deploys.
It's been a steady, steady reduction down to 1,550 on each side.
But the treaty can't be renewed, and any hope for a follow-up treaty ended with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered a one-year informal extension to New START's limits, and Gottemoeller thinks President Trump should take him up on it. Otherwise, we're into the depths of a nuclear arms race, and that's an expensive proposition. New start expires at midnight.

There were signs of forced entry at her home in Tucson, Arizona. Along with her siblings, Guthrie released a video pleading for their mother's release.
We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen.

Opera Philadelphia is premiering a new work tonight with a libretto by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Michael R. Jackson, featuring music by 10 composers.
Jeff London reports on this experimental way of creating an opera.
The opera is called Complications Ensue, and it's been written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Opera Philadelphia. The piece looks decade by decade at the life of a character named Sue, played mostly mutely by Justin Vivian Bond. Michael R. Jackson, who wrote A Strange Loop, says he was excited by the challenge.
I had been seeking an opportunity to really stretch artistically and take a risk. that's not inexorably tethered to commercial success.
