Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman, the Pentagon has ordered the withdrawal of U.S. Marines who were deployed to Los Angeles. President Trump sent them in early June in order to protect immigration officers during protest. Some of these were violent. Steve Futterman has more from Los Angeles.

In a statement, Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell says the move comes with, as he put it, stability returning to LA. Praise the Marines for restoring order and upholding the rule of law. From the start, the deployment of the seven hundred Marines was met with sharp criticism from state and local officials who said they were not necessary and only escalated tensions. LA Mayor Karen Bass now says she wants the Marines along with remaining National Guard troops removed. We need all of the troops to return home. Initially, four thousand National Guard troops were sent here, around two thousand remote. Remain, it's estimated it cost one hundred thirty four million dollars to deploy the Marines and National Guard to LA.

The return to negotiations comes as President Trump has threatened additional economic penalties on Russia if Moscow doesn't agree to a ceasefire by early September. Yet the Kremlin insists Russia wants more. peace only once its objectives in Ukraine are reached, and Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, says Russia and Ukraine remain diametrically opposed in their proposals to negotiate an end to the war. Jeff Katz, the study's co-author and a professor of psychological sciences at Auburn University, says they found energetic dogs reacted more to other animals.
