Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Linda Kenyon. Hurricane Lala has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but not before lashing Hawaii's big island with powerful winds and drenching rain. Robert Ballard is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. He says Lala has certainly made its mark while recovery could take quite some time.
We've already had reports of homes on the southeast part of the Big Island which have been swept away from flash flooding. So this is going to be a tremendous recovery process, especially for parts of the Big Island.
Ballard says blocked roads, fallen trees, and down power lines have been left in La's wake. It's the first time in more than one hundred and fifty years a storm of its kind has hit the big island.
