Live from MPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. Following last night's state dinner at the White House, President Trump is to take Chinese leader Xi Jinping on a tour of the National Archives today. The two are cap Xi's three day state visit that has divided the Chinese community in Washington DC. Clashes broke out among groups of pro and anti China demonstrators Thursday, as MPR's Emily Fang reports.
Ahead of Xi's arrival in the US, demonstrators critical of Xi Jinping carrying bullhorns called for him to step down. Other protesters donned Winnie the Pooh outfits because the cartoon character has become a satirical meme for Xi. But hundreds of Xi Jinping supporters gathered Thursday morning to greet the leader's motorcade as it headed to the White House. They sang patriotic Chinese songs like this one and waved Chinese flags as Chinese embassy officials coordinated their movements. The same day, demonstrators advocating for Tibetan and Hong Kong and Uyghur rights and critical of China's ruling party say they were attacked by mass Chinese men and had their protest flags ripped away. U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy ruled that the Homeland Security Department's policy to remove migrants to third countries is unlawful. The California Supreme Court's forcing the Republican sheriff of Riverside County to return more than six hundred fifty thousand ballots he seized following a special election last year that favored Democrats. Sheriff Chad Bianco said he confiscated the ballots after a local group complained about the vote count.
Bianco says he will comply with the ruling. Starbucks says it's planning to close two hundred fifty stores in North America later this week, the second wave of store closings under CEO Brian Nickel, NPR Zelina Selyok reports.
