Why is Iran demanding a negotiated settlement to unblock the Strait of Hormuz?
Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Iran says only a negotiated settlement can lead to the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz. On Saturday, President Trump said he rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the strait within the week. The BBC's Yosef Taha reports.
Speaking to reporters in New York, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Arachi said that Tehran was yet to receive Washington's official response through mediators. Mr Trump had said Iran had only put forward the proposal because it was losing the war. But Mr Arachi said that his country would not back down from the conditions it had set out in the proposal, namely the cessation of all regional fighting, including in Lebanon, and the lifting of US sanctions. Meanwhile, the Iranian authorities issued a warning to vessels not to use what they called unauthorized routes through the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical for world oil supplies.

A hurricane watch has been canceled, and the hurricane is no longer expected to make direct landfall.
