Writing on Truth Social over the weekend, President Trump said the new standards for automakers would be less stringent. and saved drivers across the US thousands of dollars on the purchase of a new vehicle. Highway safety regulators expect the administration to require new vehicles to average roughly thirty-four and a half miles per gallon in the twenty thirty one model year. That's sharply lower than the rule set by the Biden administration calling for that mileage standard to be more than fifty miles per gallon by the same model year.
Two giant pandas from China have arrived at the Atlanta Zoo. The animals were promised by China's president Xi Jinping during last week's state visit to the US. Alex Helmick with member station WABE has more from Atlanta.
Pingping and Fu Xuang are on loan to Zoo Atlanta for ten years. The deal was one of the few firm outcomes from the three-day visit, with Xi saying it was a sign of friendship between the two countries. China has long used pandas as part of its diplomacy. The last pandas at the zoo were sent back to China in 2024 when a previous deal expired. The Bears will be a very good idea. Be quarantined for about a month in the zoo's new giant panda complex, an opening date for that has not yet been announced. For NPR News, I'm Alex Homick in Atlanta.
