Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingly. Democratic Socialist Zoran Mamdani will be the next mayor of New York City. NPR's Brian Mann says Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Lewa in the city's mayoral race.
A year ago, Mamdani, who will be New York's first Muslim mayor, was relatively unknown, and Cuomo was a political titan. But last night, it was Mamdani declaring victory.
The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty.
Cuomo was hobbled in this race by sexual harassment scandals that drove him from office in 2021. In his concession, Cuomo voiced anger at Mamdani's embrace of socialism.
We support an economy of jobs, of opportunity, of entrepreneurship.
But many of Mamdani's supporters say his victory was a sign voters want new, more hopeful politics. Brian Mann, NPR News, New York.

The congresswoman and former Navy pilot defeated Republican Jack Cittarelli in the governor's race there. In Virginia, former Democratic Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger was elected the first female governor of the Commonwealth. Democrats also won races for lieutenant governor and the state's attorney general.
In California, voters approved Proposition 50, calling for the redrawing of the state's congressional map. Later this morning, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case testing whether President Trump can legally impose tariffs on U.S. imports through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. NPR's Nina Totenberg has more.
Tariffs are the hallmark of Trump's economic policy, and he has said on Truth Social that if he loses this case and is not able to move quickly to use the power of tariffs, he would be, quote, defenseless. leading perhaps even to the ruination of our nation. Indeed, Trump flirted with the idea of attending today's argument, but in the end decided against being the first president to do that.

Authorities in Kentucky say at least seven people were killed in yesterday's fiery crash of a UPS cargo plane as it was attempting to take off from Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville. Video appears to show flames on the plane's left wing as it lifted off the runway. It then crashed and exploded in a massive fireball. At least four of those killed were on the ground.
That plane was headed to Honolulu at the time. This is NPR News. The federal government shutdown is now the longest on record. This is day 36. Flight delays continue to be reported at airports across the U.S. because of staffing shortages. Food benefits to millions of Americans under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are still being disrupted.
In addition, telehealth services remain in limbo for those on Medicare, as NPR's Yuki Noguchi reports.
Telehealth is very popular, and nearly 7 million Medicare recipients use it every year. But pandemic-era rules that enabled it weren't renewed. Kyle Zebley heads public policy for the American Telemedicine Association. He says Medicare patients and their doctors are unwitting victims of the shutdown.
