Chapter 2: What tragic event involving a National Guard member is reported?
President Trump says 20-year-old West Virginia National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom has died. She was one of two guardsmen shot blocks from the White House Wednesday. NPR's Brian Mann has more.
We do know that her family was with her while speaking to U.S. military leaders around the world. Trump said the other guard member, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, also from West Virginia, is still fighting for his life after undergoing surgery. Wolfe remains in critical condition.
And Pierce Brian Mann. The suspect, a 29-year-old Afghan national who officials say worked with the CIA in Afghanistan and came to America after the U.S. withdrew, was also shot and is hospitalized. He allegedly drove across the country from Washington state to carry out the attack.
Trump says he's ordering a review of all Afghans who entered the country during the Biden administration and has ordered hundreds more guards to the nation's capital. Russian President Putin says he remains open to elements of a new U.S. plan to end the war in Ukraine, but he warned that his forces would continue fighting should Ukraine refuse to sign on to key concessions.

The Kremlin often says it would prefer to achieve its goals in Ukraine through diplomatic rather than military means. That was the core message of a lengthy press conference by President Putin in Central Asia. Putin said he still considered a U.S. peace proposal a loose roadmap towards ending the conflict...
that warned Russia would secure its territorial goals by force if Ukraine refused to withdraw voluntarily. Putin also weighed in on recently leaked phone transcripts that suggested White House envoy Steve Witkoff was biased in favor of Moscow in the peace negotiations. Putin called Witkoff an intelligent man who promoted the interests of his country.

Soleil, a pitch-black dog and part of the herding group, beat out six other finalists to capture the competition, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia. Her handler, Daniel Martin, from Princeton, North Carolina, said Soleil's attitude and movement helped her clinch best in show. He said she also loves the crowd and the big arena. He called it a fantastic day.
The American Kennel Club describes Belgian sheepdogs as highly trainable herders that are, quote, bright, watchful and serious-minded. It says they crave human companionship and abhor neglect. A rare crystal FabergƩ egg crafted for Russia's royal ruling family before the revolution is going up for auction. Christie's says the rock crystal winter egg, with a snowflake motif in platinum and 4,500 tiny diamonds, is expected to go for more than $26 million. It's one of only seven still in private hands. The egg was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II in 1913 as a present for his mother.
