Live from NPR News, I'm Janine Herbst. One of the two National Guard members shot blocks from the White House Wednesday has died. President Trump made the announcement on a Thanksgiving call to military units last night. NPR's Sage Miller is traveling with the president.

20-year-old Beckstrom volunteered to be on duty for Thanksgiving. She was on patrol a few blocks from the White House when a gunman opened fire. The gunman struck Beckstrom and 24-year-old Guardsman Andrew Wolf. Trump says Wolf remains in critical condition and is fighting for his life. Trump also says that he spoke with Beckstrom's family following the loss of their loved one.
