Chapter 2: What happened to the West Virginia Guard members near the White House?
One of the two West Virginia Guard members shot blocks from the White House Wednesday has died. NPR's Brian Mann has more on 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom.
She was an Army specialist from Summersville, West Virginia. She joined the service in 2023. And speaking last night, President Trump described her as an incredible person in every single way. He made the announcement Beckstrom had died during a conference call with military leaders.

Meanwhile, Trump says his administration will work to permanently pause migration from what he calls third world countries. And here's Matt Bloom has more.
Trump didn't name any specific countries, but he claimed the pause would help fight crime and, quote, allow the U.S. system to fully recover. The announcement is one of several Trump made on immigration this week after the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C. The alleged gunman is an Afghan national who legally lived in the country for four years.
Following the shooting, the U.S. stopped processing all immigration requests relating to Afghans. Trump has also ordered the review of all green card holders from a list of 19 countries his administration deems high risk. In his post, Trump said, quote, these goals will be pursued with the aim of a major reduction in illegal and disruptive populations. Matt Bloom, NPR News.
Ukraine says it will continue to work with the American delegation on the revised peace plan elaborated alongside the Europeans in Geneva. NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports Russia's commitment, though, is far from certain.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio's comments that the U.S. will discuss long-term security guarantees for Ukraine after a peace agreement is signed is another blow to Kyiv. Nevertheless, Ukraine says it is committed to the process. On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin broke his silence about the plan.
After vague words that it could serve as the basis for talks, Putin said hostilities would only end if Ukrainian troops withdrew from the territory. He was referring to Ukrainian land in the Donbass that Russia has been unable to fully conquer. If they don't, Putin added, Russia will seize the territory anyway.
