Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Rahm. The Supreme Court has announced it will hear a lawsuit against President Trump's efforts to restrict birthright citizenship, that people born in the U.S. are U.S. citizens. President Trump wants to limit that to babies who have at least one parent who's a citizen or a legal permanent resident.
NPR's Ron Elfing reports the Supreme Court has shown deference to the president's policies so far.
Should those babies automatically become citizens even if their parents aren't? The longstanding answer has been yes, but there has also been a body of opinion opposed to that. We had anti-immigration surges in the mid-1800s and in the 1920s, and Trump's broad-scale assault on immigration has in effect closed the southern border and unleashed aggressive deportation efforts.
But this birthright citizenship case, seeking to change the way we have long understood the Constitution, would be his biggest trophy yet.
NPR's Ron Elving. The Pentagon has created a new Army command at Fort Bragg. As Jay Price reports, it's part of the Trump administration's increasing foreign policy focus on the Americas and border security.
It's called the U.S. Army Western Hemisphere Command. During the ceremony marking its creation, its first commander, General Joseph Ryan, said building it the right way was crucial for the nation.
When we succeed, we will be proud to serve in a theater army that is ready for the myriad tasks that our nation's priority theater requires.

Chapter 2: What lawsuit will the Supreme Court hear regarding birthright citizenship?
Creating the command is in line with the new national security strategy the White House released this week. It says the United States will prioritize dominance in the security and economics of the Western Hemisphere. For NPR News, I'm Jay Price at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Pre-trial hearings in the case of Luigi Mangione, the 27-year-old accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, have concluded for the week. NPR's Sarah Ventry reports.
In this last week of hearings, police body camera footage showed the minutes leading up to Mangione's arrest, including how he was approached and searched. Nearly 20 minutes passed before police informed him of his right to remain silent. which the defense argues means statements he made to law enforcement should be inadmissible at trial.
Other evidence in question includes the 9mm handgun allegedly recovered from Mangione's backpack, as well as a notebook in which prosecutors say Mangione wrote about rebelling against the quote, deadly, greed-fueled health insurance cartel. The hearings are scheduled to continue on Monday. Sarah Ventry, NPR News, New York.
Ukrainian officials say Russia launched hundreds of missiles and dozens of drones against Ukraine overnight. The attacks come as Ukrainian negotiators are in Florida for a third day of talks with US officials on finding a path to ending the war. This is NPR News. Police in South Africa are searching for three suspects who may be those responsible for a mass shooting today.
They say at least 11 people were killed, including three children. More than a dozen others were wounded. It happened at an unlicensed bar near Pretoria. South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world. A survey of 100-year-olds by UnitedHealthcare finds people who make it to the century mark are more socially engaged and physically active. NPR's Alison Aubrey reports.
There are about 100,000 centenarians in the U.S. That's expected to quadruple by mid-century. Dr. Rhonda Randall of UnitedHealthcare says about four in five report frequent get-togethers with friends and family, and many also prioritize movement. 46% of people over the age of 100 are saying they're doing some type of strength training on a weekly basis.
36% say they participate in some kind of stress relief activity like meditation. Many say they focus on a healthy diet, and almost one in three have tried ChatGPT or another AI platform showing curiosity about new technology. Alice Norbury, NPR News.
The black bear hunt is underway in Florida. For the first time in 10 years, hunters may legally hunt the black bear with rifles and crossbows. They'll need a permit, one of 172 issued, which entitles them to kill one black bear. Opponents of the sanctioned killing fail to stop the hunt in court. Some say that they applied for permits with no intention of using them.
