Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingly. Israel says it's barring more than two dozen humanitarian aid organizations from operating in the Gaza Strip. They include Doctors Without Borders. Israel says the organizations have failed to comply with new registration rules. Israeli officials say the move is necessary to prevent Hamas and other militant groups from infiltrating aid groups. Aid groups warn the changes will harm civilians who are in desperate need of food, water and other help. A federal judge in Tennessee says there's some evidence the government's case against Kilmar Abrego Garcia is vindictive. Federal prosecutors charged him with human smuggling. As Mariana Bacayau with member station WPLN reports, the Justice Department began investigating Abrego Garcia after the U.S.
Supreme Court ordered he be returned to the U.S., following his wrongful deportation to El Salvador.
Judge Waverly Crenshaw has reviewed internal documents that show the charges against Abrego Garcia from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee were made a, quote, top priority for the DOJ a few days after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered him return to the U.S. That's after he was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March. Since then, Abrego Garcia's case has become a flashpoint for critics of the administration's crackdown on illegal immigration. In a statement, the federal attorney's office says that the decision to prosecute was made based on facts and standard practices. The next hearing in the case is set for late January. Lake effect snows are common for communities south and east of the Great Lakes, Ontario, and Erie. Wind-driven snows blowing into northern New York from Lake Ontario are expected to pound the region with two to four feet of snow, and forecasters add some places could receive more. The heavy snow will be whipped up by driving winds gusting to 40 miles per hour. That creates the potential for whiteout conditions. Some communities have already received more than 20 inches of snow. The winter storm warning is in effect through Saturday morning. Farther west, buffalo should be spared the worst of the storms, but nearby communities such as Orchard Park could receive 1 to 3 feet of snow. The winter storm warning there is in effect through very early Friday.

So, Ron Mamdani says he's planning to hold two swearing-in ceremonies as he takes over as mayor of New York City. One will be a small private event with family and friends. A member of the NFL's New England Patriots is facing charges of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault. Wide receiver Stephon Diggs denies the charges involving a chef he hired. As NPR's Dan Ronan reports, the team says it's aware of the charges, and for now, Diggs remains on the active roster.
According to police, the alleged incident took place December 2nd at Diggs' home near Boston. It was reported to police December 16th. A woman who worked for Diggs as a chef said she was afraid to file a police report. She said Diggs became upset when she insisted on being paid and she said he struck her in the face and tried to choke her. Diggs' attorney says the allegations are false. The 32-year-old Diggs recently signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Patriots. The team said in a statement, We support Stephan.
