But Nunez is out now with her first ever collection of short stories. It Will Come Back to You pulls together thirteen stories she's published here and there. They cover a broad range of themes, adolescence, mental health, mothers and daughters. We even meet what might be a serial killer in the making. In their totality, these pieces offer glimpses of life interrupted, reconsidered, or redirected, and all using gorgeous prose.
Sigrid Nunes joins us from the MPR Studios in New York. Welcome. Thank you for having me. Why a short story collection now?
Well, the collection wasn't really planned. What happened was that after I finished my most recent novel, The Vulnerables, Instead of starting another novel and Uh I found myself writing a short story. Immediately after that I wrote another story, and then after that another story. And I had also written a story while I was finishing The Vulnerables. So I had these four recent stories. And I thought if I look back at my older stories, I There's the possibility that some of them would go well with these and then I'd have a
book. I want to bring us now into these stories, and we can start with It's All Good, which is about a middle aged daughter coping with her mother's slide into dementia. Would you read a bit of that for us?
Sure. I have a hard time understanding how quickly things got to this point. At Thanksgiving she was herself. Going to church, playing cards and miniature golf with her friends, cleaning her own house. But right after New Year's she started having trouble sleeping. Weeks of bad nights later her mind had lost its grip. She forgot many things, including what you're supposed to do when you're thirsty. I figured once they treated her for dehydration, the gibbering stranger in the hospital bed would turn back into my sane seventy year old mother and Whose only real health problem was a little high blood pressure. But I never saw that woman again.
As someone who lost a m my mom to dementia, that was a gut punch. And I found myself thinking, were you just following your imagination here, or did you set out to write about what is a widely shared experience uh for people now?
In this story I was thinking in particular about the relationship between a brother and sister and their very different attitudes towards their mother's slide into dementia. I thought about the characters rather than a kind of abstract thinking about I wanted to explore dementia and its effect on on a family.
Well let's talk about the brother and sister because you use this Fascinating device. So mom in the story develops a crush on Brad Pitt. And so the brother hires a Brad Pitt lookalike for her birthday lunch and the sister, who's the narrator, thinks that's risky for her mom's emotional state and is appalled. I get the sense you were kind of on team brother.
I'm not sure because you know, although I I think he's a charming character and that that was a charming and even loving idea, I think I more identify with the frustration of the sister of mister Keep It Up Beat all the time and then these ideas that he has, that she is worried could be risky.
