What is the purpose of the Faster Payments Council’s Off the Rails intro and recent event highlights?

Anthony Serio 0:05
Off the rail. from the US Faster Payments Council.
Reed Luhtanen 0:29
I'm Reed Lutanin, Executive Director of the US Faster Payments Council, and this is Off the Rails from the US Faster Payments Council, sponsored by Open Payment Network. Today I'm talking with Anthony Sario, Chief Risk Officer at Sphere Labs, about cross-border instant payments, Web3, stablecoins, and we compare notes on our favorite Disney rides, but first the headlines. It was so great to see everyone in Denver at the FPC Fall Member Meeting. We had our biggest attendance ever, and we gave our members a first look at groundbreaking new data produced by the FPC in partnership with Volante Technologies in the form of our 2024 Faster Payments Barometer, as well as a new project resulting from a partnership between the Federal Reserve and the Faster Payments Council, giving insights into trends, adoption traction, and use case adoption for instant payments.
Reed Luhtanen 1:16
If you're there, You got all that information way ahead of the rest of the industry. And one more time, a huge thank you to our growing list of sponsors for the event, ACI Worldwide, Aloya Corporate Federal Credit Union, BNY Mellon, Cross River, Endava, Euronet, FinSley, Form 3, MasterCard, MyTech Systems, NASDAQ Verafin, Nietzsche, North American Banking Company, Shazam, the Clearinghouse, and Trustly. And a huge thank you to the FPC team. They truly go above and beyond to make these events special for our members. So huge thank you again to Elizabeth Kreiss, Erica Reese, Angela Hendershot, and Christine Delauder. And one more thank you for our unofficial sixth team member, Kevin Miyamoto from Identifi, who once again knocked it out of the park as our MC.
Reed Luhtanen 2:01
But between that event and now, I'm sure many of you were either at the Chicago Payments Symposium, which I unfortunately had to miss this year, or Epcor's Payments Palooza in Kansas City, which I was fortunate enough to be able to get to a portion of. Thank you to Brandy Thacker, James Carrick, and the whole Epcor team for having me and giving me time on stage to talk about faster payments. And catching up on FPC deliverables released in September, we have a pair of reports from our cross-border work group sponsored by MasterCard. First, there is How to ISO 2022, which provides a tailored, detailed roadmap for financial institutions on how to successfully adopt and implement ISO 2022. The guide covers everything from the technical specifications of the standard to practical steps for integration and migration.
Reed Luhtanen 2:44
Mitigation. Migration. It is designed to help organizations understand the operational changes required and the benefits that can be unlocked through this transition. Then there's distinguishing advantage in the format and structure of ISO 2002 for instant payment adoption, which builds on that implementation guideline guidance in how to ISO 2002. delves into the specific benefits that ISO 2022 offers over legacy message standards. The report highlights key features such as richer data content, enhanced straight-through processing, and improved operational efficiency, all of which are critical to the successful adoption of instant payments and cross-border transactions. Looking ahead, I'll be at money twenty twenty toward the end of the month, so I hope to see many friends and colleagues there.

For those looking for something to do on Sunday evening, check out Paymentsbear Nerds dot com for a fun, informal brewery crawl a bit off the hustle and bustle of the strip. And that will do it for the headlines. It is time for my conversation with Anthony Sario of Sphere Labs.
Reed Luhtanen 4:01
All right, we're joined by Anthony Serio of Sphere Labs. Anthony, thanks for joining us. Great to be here. Thanks for having me. All right. Let's get started.

How did Sphere Labs originate and what is its mission to improve global financial inclusion?

Reed Luhtanen 4:09
I want to start talking about mission, because uh as listeners know, of course, FPC is a mission-driven organization. That's also the case uh for you guys at Sphere Lab. So if you could talk to me about why your founder started the company and what you guys are trying to achieve there, I think that's gonna be pretty interesting for kind of setting the stage for where we're going with this conversation.
