What headlines and FPC event updates are announced at the start of the episode?
Off the rails from the US Faster Payments Council.
I'm Reid Lutanen, CEO of the U.S. Faster Payments Council, and this is Off the Rails from the U.S. Faster Payments Council. Today's a fun episode because I had the opportunity to sit down with Steve Stevens, who's the executive director of ASCX9. Steve and I talk about the need for standards in the payment space, partnership between FPC and X9, and some of Steve's fun hobbies. But first, the headlines. FEC's spring member meeting kicked off at the beautiful Gaylord National Harbor outside Washington, D.C. on February 25th with some incredible workshops led by CGI's Sean Devaney. Then on February 26th, today, if you happen to be listening the day that this episode comes out, we have the first full day of sessions, networking, and then a fantastic evening event sponsored by Visa Direct.
Huge thank you to our member meeting sponsors. Deep breath again. As platinum sponsors, ACI Worldwide, North American Banking Company, Visa Direct, and then of course our gold sponsors, Alloya, BNY, Brightwell, DeNovo Treasury, Epay Resources, Federal Reserve Financial Services, Finsley, MasterCard, Form 3, Plaid, Shazam, The Clearinghouse, PTAP Advisory, Trustly, Validify, Westpay, and Wyzea. I think we can still squeeze one or two logos in there for the fall, so let us know if you're interested. As always, you can learn more about the FPC member meetings, including our fall member meeting I just referred to that's being held in conjunction with EPCOR in Kansas City, and register for those by heading to FasterPaymentsCouncil.org.
You can find a link toward the top of the page in the banner, or you can click on News and Events and then FPC Events to navigate that way. We have yet another new resource to announce, B2B Cross-Border Payments. Expert Insights on Faster Payments Adoption Report. This report, published by the FPC Cross-Border Payments Workgroup, sponsored by Mastercard, explores the most pressing challenges facing B2B cross-border payments and practical strategies for addressing them. While cross-border B2B transactions remain critical to global trade, many organizations still contend with friction around settlement speed, liquidity management, foreign exchange compliance, data quality, and fraud risk. The report outlines seven core barriers to adoption of faster payments cross-border and highlights how modern payment hubs, APIs, and emerging technologies can help overcome these obstacles.
Drawing on insights from industry experts, the paper also discusses the operational impacts and where future progress may be made.
Who is ASC X9 and how did the organization evolve over time?
Also thrilled to announce that we have four incredible candidates to join the FPC's half of the ASCX9 FPC Partnership Steering Committee. Big thank you to the many amazing individuals who put their names in to join this committee. The four individuals who will be elected who will be up for election to the committee by the membership are Yoav Ash from Thought Machine, David Barber from Validify, Christy Gant Bean from Wells Fargo, and Joni Stem from Fiserv. FPC members, you'll be receiving more information on the candidates as well as your ballots to cast your vote very soon. If you aren't an FPC member and you want to participate in the election or you just want to help us do the important standards work that will be at the heart of the partnership, reach out to us about becoming a member at info at FasterPaymentsCouncil.org.
And with that, let's get to that conversation with Steve Stevens from ASCX9.
All right, we're joined by Steve Stevens from ASCX9.
Which emerging technologies is X9 watching (AI, quantum, QR codes) and why?
Steve, thanks for joining us. I'm glad to be here. All right, Steve, let's start at a high level. I think there are people in the audience who certainly will be familiar with ASCX9, but I think plenty who are not. So how about we start there? Just what is X9?
X9 is a 53-year-old standards body created primarily in the early days to create standards for checks and some of the early payment and identifier systems. We were initially created by the American Bankers Association, and we spun off from them over 20 years ago.
