What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Off the rails from the U.S. Fast Repayments Council,
I'm Reid Lutanen, CEO of the U.S. Faster Payments Council, and this is Off the Rails from the U.S. Faster Payments Council. Today, I'm joined by Caroline Cipriano, co-founder and COO of JJ4Tech. Caroline and I are going to be talking about QR codes, liquidity management, and how she can probably, definitely beat me up. But first, the headlines. We're beginning to build out our fall member meeting, which will be in Kansas City in November. Keep an eye out for more information in our newsletter and on our website under news and events. That's fasterpaymentscouncil.org, of course. And as always, a huge thank you to our fall member meeting sponsors. First, our platinum sponsors, ACI Worldwide, North American Banking Company, and Visa Direct.
And our gold sponsors, Alloya, BNY. Brightwell, DeNovo Treasury, ePay Resources, Federal Reserve Financial Services, Finsley, MasterCard, Form 3, Plaid, Shazam, The Clearinghouse, PTAP Advisory, Trustly, Validify, Westpay, and Wysia. And we have a new resource available at FasterPaymentsCouncil.org, Stablecoins in B2B Payments, a domestic opportunity for U.S. banks and credit unions. This blog shows how stablecoins are gaining momentum in B2B payments and their potential is expanding beyond cross-border use cases. The FPC Business Benefits of B2B Instant Payments workgroup explores this shift in this blog and highlights how stablecoins can enable faster settlement, improve liquidity management, and new opportunities for financial institutions as adoption continues to grow.
And with that, let's get to that conversation with Caroline.
All right. We're joined by Caroline from JJ4Tech. Caroline, thanks for joining.
Thank you so much for inviting me in. I'm so glad to be here today.
All right. How about we dive right in? And I think we're going to jump around a little bit here. But one of the things that I thought about as we were talking and as I was putting these questions together is that this stuff is going to be connected.
Who is Caroline Cypriano and what will we cover in this episode?
And it's all connected to enabling faster payments usage by financial institution customers. I think there's a pretty heavy lean toward consumer use cases too. So how about we start with QR codes, something that I know you know a lot about. You've spent a lot of time working and leading our QR code work group at the FPC. You're from Brazil, of course, where QR codes have really taken off. for consumer use cases. And now you're, now you're chairing our user experience work groups. A lot of, a lot of things going on for you, Caroline, um, from your perspective, what are the key aspects of QR codes that have made them successful in other markets like Brazil? And, and do you see that as something that can in, from your perspective should be replicated in the United States?
So, uh, that's a great place to start. Like, um, First, I think it's important to clarify that QR codes are not a payment method themselves, right? They are a payment initiation layer. So they sit on top of any rail, so including instant payment rails like FedNow, like the FedNow service or RTP. So I'll focus on their role in enabling faster payments. So if you look at markets like Brazil that you just mentioned, right, QR codes have really become the bridge between consumers and instant payments. So with pigs, for example, QR codes are now used by the vast majority of the population. So around 86% of consumers, it's huge, which shows how effectively they've scaled in every like an everyday use. So that adoption didn't didn't happen by chance.
It was driven by very practical, high frequency use cases. So in a physical retail and restaurants, for example, QR codes have been displayed directly on the screen of a mobile POS or placed on tables, allowing customers to pay instantly through their banking app. No need of a card or traditional terminal if you go through that route, right? In e-commerce, dynamic QR codes streamline checkout and speed up confirmation and fulfillment. And one of my favorite use cases is for bills and invoices.
