It's Richie McCormack here alongside Brian Kerr after we saw Nottingham Forest pull back a late goal to equalise against Newcastle at the City Grand this afternoon. Elliot Anderson levelling the scores with three minutes to play after Harvey Barnes had prodded Newcastle in front with 16 to go. Brian Kerr, it was like one of those games where even when it was at 0-0 you could never say it was boring. It was actually really entertaining I think up until that point. The goals really livened it up for that last 15 minutes or so.
Yeah, I thought it was a very good game. Newcastle have nothing really to play for. They've had a poor season and they were on a very poor run of results until they beat Brighton last week. They played really well in that match. But given the situation they were in, I was surprised about the verve, the enthusiasm they played with. They were aggressive around the middle of the field. They got at Nottingham Forest, didn't allow them to settle the ball. And I thought they played very well in Newcastle. They didn't have the quality in the final tour to let them down on the solo. Didn't do an awful lot until they had the free kick rattled off the bar. But once they got the breakthrough, I kind of felt they looked like they were going to win this game.
But then Norwich and Forest upped the game. The substitutes made a difference. They obviously have had a tough week, a long week. Good win against Chelsea last Monday. Then towards the night, a kind of heavy defeat and fairly dispiriting overall. The hope they had going into that match to lead them from the first leg ended up getting turned 4-0. So today it took them a long time to get going, but the manager made good substitutions, they made an impact, and probably just about earned a draw in the end.
Newcastle had a really good platform through Guy Maroiche, who had chances of his own of course, and Sandro Tonali in the centre of the park. As we mentioned in the commentary, there's been a bit of speculation that one or both of those could go in the summer. Newcastle probably in a position with PSR where they need to sell before they can buy. Holding on to at least one of them is key for them.

Yeah, it'd be certainly hard to replace those two players of such quality. Guimaraes has been the top scorer from the centre midfield position which probably says a bit about some of the rest of them but you look at the line up today and Anthony Gordon doesn't start in the match and a lot of speculation about him as well and it's a bit surprising you would have thought given the takeover by the Saudi people that Newcastle will be pushing on and they'd be the ones that the speculation would be about who they're going to sign. Are they going to sign some big names, some proven players let's say. And some of that speculation seems to be about players going out of the club who've done very well for them.
So it will be usually disappointing I think from a supporters point of view should they lose some of those fellas particularly those two centre midfield players I think Gordon he looks gone doesn't he if you didn't come on today you'd have to be on the bench with the speculation it's a strange one I think what I heard during the week that Bayern Munich had started talks with Newcastle and Newcastle don't seem to have denied that they don't seem to have come across that that isn't happening so that's that would suggest there's something going on and would obviously be attractive for Anthony Gordon to go to Bayern Munich where you have a real chance of winning trophies and going on in the Champions League as we saw this year they weren't quite good enough when they came down to it in the end against PSG but you know it would be
