Are people still watching Jay's games, Al's brother? That's a good question. I don't know. Dylan Cease on the mound tonight. I think Dylan Cease is appointment viewing at this point. He might be the only one, though. If there's any... I don't think there's another Blue Jay I really am interested in, not even Vladdy at this point, especially at home where he's yet to hit a home run. But if I hear Dylan Cease is starting, I'm going to make sure that I flip the TV on, at least passively watch.
It almost feels like it is appointment viewing just to tune into every Vladdy at bat because he's got to hit one eventually, right?
I've been saying that all year, it feels. and continually he doesn't is the problem. Now he's going to hit one. Wouldn't it be incredible? At this point, are you at a point where it's almost a better story for him not to hit a home run all season at home, or do you think him finally hitting a home run would be a bigger story?
No, I think obviously it would be emblematic of the way the year went if he went the entire 81 home games without hitting a home run. It would be incredible. It would be like one of the most inexplicable fall-offs in the history of pro sports for a guy that owned the postseason, was literally the best player in the postseason by many measures, who suddenly just forgot how to do something he once knew how to do very well. So that's the better story. It would be emblematic of a real disappointing season. But I also believe, and I've seen this enough with this Blue Jays organization over the years, where the season's lost, all hope is gone, and then they go on a run.
And buckle up. Yeah. Buckle up. You know what the thing about that is? They're not so far out of it where... If they go on a run, they could get close enough to kind of sniff the playoffs a little bit. But I don't know. This year does seem different. In the past, sure, that's been the case. But there's been so many moments this season where I've thought, oh, is that the moment? Is this the turning point in the season? Is that where things are going to turn? Is that the May 28th? Pinch hit home run by Bo Bichette. Is that that moment from this year? I've probably said that five or six times over the season, and we've yet to see it come through. One step forward, two steps back all season. I'm getting to a point where I've lost faith that there's going to be that moment this year where they turn it around, though.
That's the thing. There just hasn't been a lot of signs that it's coming, right? There really haven't been a lot of tangible signs. But you're right. You look at the fan graphs, playoff probability, and it's like 7%, which is not 1%. It's not 0% because that's the system that they've built here is that everybody's kind of still in it. They're only five and a half out of the final wild card. And I know they've got a lot of teams to hop over if they were ever going to get there. And I don't think they're going to get there. But to your point, maybe it'll be the trade deadline. Maybe the sell-off at the trade deadline and guys leaving town and sort of management signaling that they've lost all belief in this club.
That will take all the pressure off. It'll put whatever pressure there was on. I'm not sure these guys are actually under pressure right now because everybody's expecting them to be terrible because they have been most of the year.
