What are the driver ratings for the Austrian Grand Prix?
Hello everybody and welcome back to the P1 Podcast with Matt and Tommy. Driver Ratings, Austrian Grand Prix Edition. That's right, we've got our grades from 0 all the way to 10 for all of the 22 drivers that we saw race around the Red Bull Ring. Tommy? You're in a lovely top that you can wear on sort of like a movie set because it's very strobe-y, but in the driver rating... Oh, do I need to change it? No, no, I'm saying in like, you know, you know, like if you're doing like a proper interview somewhere that year, don't wear stripes. No, no, surely it's okay. Here at the P1 Podcast, we allow it. All right, we enjoy the strobe-y. Right, let's get into driver ratings and begin with Sergio Perez, who started in P19 and did not finish.
This is the most bog-standard, straight down the middle, five out of ten I've ever seen in my entire life for... I mean, Cadillac, I would give a team grade. I know people have been screaming, oh, you need to do team grades. We're not doing it right now, but if I was to give Cadillac a team grade, it'd be zero, because they could not put those upgrades on the car without them breaking almost immediately. What I will say is that... There were glimmers of pace across the weekend when Perez's car actually worked. But I can't give anything more than a five because we saw very little of him. But I also don't want to give him a no grade. So five down the middle. There you go, Perez.
I have gone for a five as well. Very hard to judge. It was a very bog standard Cadillac race. I said bog standard.
You can't say bog standard as well.
The slowest car other than Aston Martin. Yeah, we've seen races, haven't we, where Perez in particular has sometimes overdriven, done a better job in the Cadillac than where it probably should be. Unfortunately for Cadillac, this is just one of those races where they were sat at the back of the grid other than Aston Martin. And yeah, it's a five all day long.
Well, yeah, they couldn't do really enough running to do any much better than that. So hopefully for Silverstone, they will have a working, functioning car with the upgrade package. The fans, they agree. They've given Checo a 5 out of 10. Valtteri Bottas started 20th, also did not finish.
I've gone for a five for Valtteri Bottas. I think this, he's, what we've seen before with Bottas, he's much closer now. He's not had anywhere near as bad of a run recently as he kind of did towards the start of the season where it was very worrying. But he was there or thereabouts with Perez this race, but it still just couldn't show anything with how short their race was. So I've gone for a five.
Yeah, qualifying wasn't disastrous for Bottas.
How did Sergio Perez perform during the race?
It has been this season, but I can't downgrade him. I mean, he again only did not even a handful, like genuinely a smidge of laps before his car broke as well and Cadillac were done for the day. Going to give back the Bottas a five as well because, you know, glimmers of hope for my goat that perhaps one lap pace is not completely gone. Just occasionally this season, it has been dreadful. But I can't say that this time. So five out of ten. The fans gave him a five. Now on to cars that actually did things and stayed in the race for longer than a few laps. Sort of. Franco Colapinto started 16th and finished 15th. My grade for Franco Colapinto is a 5 out of 10. Even though, yes, very different sort of set of adventure for Colapinto compared to the Cadillacs.
Nothing to really write home about when it comes to Colapinto's weekend. Now, he was a long way behind Gasly in qualifying, although, you know, He made a mistake on his final lap. So realistically, you can't, it looks worse than it actually is, but also he made the mistake and therefore that's what it ended up being. And then as for the race, he was kind of just stuck after his poor qualifying, didn't have the pace of Gasly. And so I'm going to go for a five out of 10.
I am also going for a 5 out of 10 for Colapinto.
There will be other grades than fives.
We started with some drivers that have had very uneventful races other than, I guess, the Cadillacs, but not for the right reasons.
