How did Karen and Cheryl’s home remodel spark a conversation about intention?
Hey everybody and welcome to another episode of Intention is Everything. I am your co-host, Karen Frazier, and with me as always my friend Cheryl Knight Wilson. Hey, Cheryl. Hey Karen, how are you doing? Well, you know, we had to, we, we had planned to do like a mid-month show because we always do them like twice a month, right? Yes. And then we started remodeling because where are we gonna go and what else are we gonna do? It's winter, it's you know, we're we're heading into we were just talking about this off off the air, we're heading into um a year. of this crap, right? Of this lockdown stuff. And so so I started in December. I started working on our kitchen and I started really deep cleaning the house.
And I think we talked about that a little bit probably on the last show. And well what that led to is like almost a full kitchen remodel. Well, that's a great benefit of being closed down
in a lockdown, right? Right.
Right. But there there was a little noise in my house for a few weeks and so and and swearing. I'm not gonna lie, there was some swearing. And so I thought it so when it came time for us to record, Jim was actually standing on one of our new counters, right? And installing lights. Well, in our house where we live, it was it was built by a guy, like he built it himself and he wasn't builder. And so what we have discovered over the years is that nothing was done as you would expect it to be or normally, right? So whenever we remodeled anything, even something that would seem super simple, like replacing a light fixture. Those things are held together with like chewing gum and wire hangers and rubber bands.
And so everything is like so hanging a light would take somebody an hour. It took us like a day just to hang a light in the kitchen because the wiring was not right and the light box was right and nothing was installed right and oh yeah. Wow, you are gonna be so
relieved when you are done with the whole project.
Well, I'm gonna have to start over or something if we're still locked down, man. Seriously. What do I do then? Yeah. I told you this off the air too. The irony is, is the other thing I've been doing is I absolutely did the whole deep clean of the house. Yeah. So you can anybody could stop in at any time and basically eat food off my floors. But nobody can stop in. So we're totally set up for a party, but we can't have one. I'm so sorry, Karen. I'm so sorry. I know, I know. But you know, it's actually it's it's brought some things to mind that actually fit this show really well. So I'll just mention because I've been thinking about this stuff as I've been cleaning and doing the stuff. And when we do things in our home, who do we do it for?
Are we doing it so that people who come by are impressed? Or are we actually doing it for ourselves? And so everything I have done now is For us, for me, because I like it and because I want to live in an environment that's like that. Um and so while I joke about well now nobody can come over and my house is like banging, right? Yeah. But but the truth is is that I am finding more quiet enjoyment of my home, even though I'd like to leave it just, you know, because I like going places and doing things sometimes and That's not like a thing right now. Yeah. Um, so but but I'm finding more enjoyment in my home and I walk through and I really like seeing everything. I like having more lighting in my house. It's prettier.
And I like having yeah. clean drawers and I like having everything in a place in a place. I like all of that stuff. Um and in the past when I did like the really deep cleans, it was usually, I'll be honest, it was usually because my mom was coming. Yeah. I know,
yeah. Yeah.
And this this is the first time in my entire life where I have done this stuff only for me because I want to do it.
Yeah, I mean that's a that's a great distinction. Are you doing it for yourself or are you doing it for others? Um what if I tell you my answer is both?
That's okay. I mean you you do you, man. Um But you know, it's like so as you know, I write cookbooks for people on special diets and things.
