His name's on a very short list alongside Vladimir Putin and the military rulers of Myanmar and Sudan. Very few people criticised the ICC until Netanyahu's name was added. It's on that basis that New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has spent months doubling down on the campaign pledge to arrest Netanyahu at the UN General Assembly in September.

As I've said, I agree with the ICC that Benjamin Netanyahu should be arrested and tried for his crimes, as I do for anyone else charged by the ICC. My administration has reviewed every avenue available under applicable law to determine whether New York City could execute the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant if Benjamin Netanyahu came here. It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant. The federal government, however, does, and I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant. And I want to be equally clear. Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large.
Well, the US didn't join the ICC despite playing a big part in its formation for very clear reasons. It recognises the supremacy of its own Supreme Court above all others, and with US servicemen uniquely dispersed all across the globe, an international authority exposed them to political risk. On that basis, it probably didn't take a legal scholar, nor the exhausting of all legal avenues, to figure out whether Mayor Mamdani could put Bibi Netanyahu in cuffs. That's why his critics are dismissing it all as a stunt. Senator John Fetterman, who is currently still a Democrat, accused him of clickbait.
He's a total clown. I mean, he has the authority to arrest Netanyahu any more than I would have the authority to arrest him in Washington, D.C., if he visited down in Washington, D.C. You're a mayor, dude. You know, pick up trash, fix some potholes, and really fix the homeless problem in your city, too. You know, you're way out of your league. And now this is irresponsible. But like I said, he's just a total clown. And it's just for clicks at this point. He knows that he has nothing actionable.
It's interesting how so many of Israel's most blinkered supporters claim that every criticism must be for clicks. If the clicks means for popularity, it may be the case that the killing of tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza and Lebanon isn't that popular. Well, President Trump posted that Netanyahu will not be arrested in any way, shape or form. His administration has attempted to sanction the ICC, although in the same post he did call for Iran's leaders to be arrested, presumably under the authority of the ICC. And putting the politics to one side, what Mamdani's threat against Netanyahu has achieved is a global profile of his alleged war crimes. Netanyahu will not be arrested when he travels to New York City in September.
