Why does the host claim the economy is “amazing” despite common pessimism?

Mike Slater 0:04
Welcome to Politics by Faith. It's where we take the news of the day, then we bring it to the Bible so we can walk away with peace and perspective. We do this because there's new headlines every day. And they can get overwhelming and cause anxiety. But Ecclesiastes says there's nothing new under the sun. So let's test that. Let's see if that's true. Thanks for being here to get the true story. And at the end of the show today, we will know the danger. of being Idol. The story of the day today. The economy It's amazing. Now when I say that what what's your first Reaction. When I say the economy is amazing. What do you feel? What's your first reaction to that? There are a thousand different metrics for what the economy is.
Mike Slater 0:54
And even the economy is a funny concept, right? 'Cause there's the economy and then there's your economy. Those are could be different things. Sort of like the temperature of the planet. Right. I I don't know what the temperature of the planet is. Like that doesn't make any sense to me at all. But I know what temperature it is outside for me right now when I go out right. So so there's a breakdown there in the concept of the economy, which is why when they ask polls about how the economy is doing, there's very different answers between how people perceive the economy and then they'll ask something about your economic situation. And when people ask about when the pollsters ask about people's particular economic situations, it's usually much better than what they perceive the economy to be.
Mike Slater 1:40
That's usually people's perception is that uh I'm I'm actually doing pretty good. Actually maybe never been better. But uh The economy's really bad. Well, how are you doing? I'm uh great, actually. Yeah, just got a new job and uh got a nice raise and uh you know it's like well w w why do you th what do you think about the economy? Oh Trump. Trump's terrible, the economy's awful. I was like, What what's up with that? Again, there's I don't know a thousand different metrics of what the economy is, but I'll just give you a couple here and we can assess this. We currently have in America the lowest poverty rate ever. And we have the highest median income. Ever. Not that's not the richest getting rich, that's median income, highest median income ever.
Mike Slater 2:29
I'll throw in a third point. Jobless claims last week, lowest level since 1969. Jobless claims are the proxy for how many people are getting laid off.

What are the key economic metrics that show the U.S. economy is at historic lows (poverty, median income, jobless claims)?

Mike Slater 2:39
And it's for the last year it's been about two hundred thousand a month. And there's gonna be something like this like some dynamic movement in the economy at all time, right? So we don't want to say zero. That doesn't make any sense. So some people are gonna get laid off and some people rehired and that's normal. But just for some perspective, two hundred thousand a month, that's the lowest in sixty years. And where I get frustrated is The only metric that people are using to make a judgment on the economy and therefore to make a determination on who they're gonna vote to take over the federal government is one metric. That's the price of gas. And in doing that, they're gonna give power over to the people who want gas to be ten dollars a gallon, like it is over in Europe.
Mike Slater 3:25
So people are frustrated that President Trump, under President Trump, the gas is a dollar more than it was previously. Now, one more point of perspective. Under the excuse me, Obama administration, those eight years, the price of uh oil was over $100 a barrel for 384 days of his presidency. Under the first Trump term, it was over $100 a barrel for zero days. Under the Biden term, it was over $100 a barrel for 84 days. And in this administration, So far it's been over $100 a barrel for only 24 days. But here's the difference. Those two Democrats since Barack Obama, they want oil to be expensive. They want gas to be $10 a gallon. They want to end drilling. They want to stop pipelines. Joe Biden, his first day in office, stopped the Keystone pipeline.
Mike Slater 4:13
Day one, top priority, gotta shut it down. Shutting down the Keystone pipeline. The Democrats want the EPA to be weaponized.
