On a scale of one to ten on the disappointment meter. Five beauts. How much of a letdown was the Cubs' 3-2 loss to the Cardinals in extra innings? I'm going to say this was not disappointing to me. I'm going to put it at a 3. They did lose in extra innings. Yvonne Herrera did get to Trent Thornton, and it hurts because two runs scored and there was a potential play at the plate, so it hurts that they lost. But it's low because of Pete Crow Armstrong. Because of the 10th inning two-run blast where he does the bat drop, where he turns to the Cubs dugout, pumps his chest a little bit. Then he does his little dance around the bases. And I just thought it was awesome. I am not somebody who needs that necessarily.

I'm surprised. I didn't think you would be with me. Because it's disappointing, yes. The biggest factor is that, again, the offense had a down day. But as you said, Mark, they have been so good since the all-star break, the offense. By and large, I mean, you're looking at the run totals for the Cubs since the All-Star break. It goes 2, 6, 10, 6, 11, 1, 3, 11, 7, 7, 10, and now 2. That's, what, three games where they've scored less than four runs? Yeah.

They had guys who did things in this game from a pitching standpoint that they're going to need down the stretch. Again, Matthew Boyd pitched well, and they need to continue that. Trent Thornton, he had a rough day, but you pitch enough pitchers, somebody's going to have a bad day. And that's the risk you take when a game goes to extra innings. So yeah, I'll give it a two. The most disappointing thing about the loss, you didn't take advantage of a Brewers loss, and now you're still... what, six games of them in the standings. So that's probably the biggest thing is that you could have been five games back in the standings. But there's plenty of time, especially if the Cubs keep playing like they've been playing, and depending on what happens on the trade deadline Monday, there's plenty of time, I believe, for the Cubs to potentially catch the Brewers.

There was also a reminder again last night that no matter how well the Cubs have managed to patch the bullpen together, and there was some nice bullpen work from Jacob Webb and Caleb Thielvar, it was a reminder that it may not be ideal to have Trent Thornton in the game in the 10th inning of a game that feels big.
