Who is Herb Howard and why is he on the show?
Bears beat reporter for the bigs. Herb Howard is joining us.
Herb Howard is here from the bigs. Herb joins us in studio right now. And, and Marshall, he smells great.
And that to me, that is bonus points. Herb immediately showed he was going to be somebody asking meaningful questions. He's going to ask a question that everyone else in the room is going to want to know the answers.
What then happens that they can't get out in his snap before the game? It's a great question. Tell him I shower, girl. Tell him. Okay, well, yeah.
Get a toke of this guy. He smells great.
I'm telling you.
Well, thank you so much, Herb, for joining us. This has been a lot of fun.
It's always fun with you guys. You are absolutely amazing. I listen to you guys when you don't invite me, so it's really, really cool.
Herb Howard, we are happy to have you on. I'm sorry. You know what I'm doing, Herb? You should get in on this, actually. He is at Herb Howard 411. He is the Bears reporter for the Biggs Media. He's our friend and a valued guest. Follow the Biggs Media on YouTube for the latest from Herb. I'm showing Mark and Marshall this tweet from Kobe Bryant, who... understandably as emotionally after what happened. But at 6.06 this morning, he says, I see all the blank talking too, LOL. Say no more. Bro, you're injured. Please do not hurt yourself further. We just want you to get better. Please do not do something that you might regret later. Did you see that this morning?
I did. I think he's wired that way. Just kind of getting to know him in the short time that he's been here. He's kind of just wired that way as a fiery competitor. He's got that chip on his shoulder. He plays that way. It was very unfortunate that he went down yesterday. He's going to be out for a couple of months. But, you know, I think he had kind of already established himself as one of the leaders on this team. He talked about it being a goal of his to be a captain. So I think that's just how he is.
Herb, looking at what transpired today, I know you've been there a while now because it's an early morning get-up for you to get out to Hallas Hall. What were your big takeaways from day two in pads?
Yeah, a big day today. Coming in excited. It was day two in patch. Yesterday was kind of just getting ramped up, getting the guys used to kind of thudding up each other a little bit. Today, they were going to the ground with the tackling. And so a little bit more physical practice. And obviously, we want to talk to defensive coordinator Dennis Allen this morning because of what happened to Kobe and what the contingency plan is and how they're going to rebound from that. And just talking to DA this morning, he said, listen, guys, you've got to step up. First guy that's getting an opportunity is Cam Lewis. And then there's a trickle-down effect, too, because with Tyler Gordon having been out so long, that was the competition of players that we saw, you know, at slot.
And so Cam Lewis was certainly one of those guys. You got Josh Blackwell in the mix, Jalen Jones, and Malik Muhammad as well. And so a bit of a trickle-down effect that's happened all over the secondary with that defense. But asking, you know, D.A. what the plan was, he's like, we just got to step up. There's nothing else they can do at this point.
Yeah, no doubt about it. We'll get back to some of the Dennis Allen in a second. Tell us about Caleb Williams and his day out there from what you saw.
A bit of an up-and-down day. You saw some flashes of his brilliance, as you always want to see, and then you saw a little bit of some inaccuracies. And so the last couple of days have been up and down for him. They certainly last week started out hot. The offense was dominating every single day. The defense the past couple of days kind of strapped it up and started to kind of fight back a little bit. So it's been a little bit of give and take today. You definitely saw some highs from Caleb, but you saw some of those inaccuracies where he's just missing guys just a little bit or not getting those runner's balls or not on the same page with some of his receivers.
