What are the key takeaways from the pre‑game press conference with Coach Ben Johnson?
Herb Howard is joining us. Herb Howard is here. Herb joins us in studio right now, and he smells great. And that, to me,
that is bonus points. Herb immediately showed he was going to be somebody asking meaningful questions. He's going to ask a question that everyone else in the room is going to want to know the answer to.
Coach, with all the injuries that you guys went through throughout the summer, obviously that impacts the kicking game and who's where. You guys get to the regular season relatively healthy considering that. Is there enough time to get the guys kind of back into the spaces that you originally had them sliding in your mind at the beginning of the game? Yeah, I mean, that's a great question, Herb.
Well, thank you so much, Herb, for joining us. This has been a lot of fun.
It's always fun with you guys. You are absolutely amazing. I listen to you guys when you don't invite me, so it's really,
really cool. With Rahimi and Grody. Get a toke of this guy. He smells great, I'm telling you. On 104.3 The Score. Herb Howard is joining us on our video stream to watch Search the Score Chicago on Twitch and YouTube. It's Rahimi and Grody on 104.3 The Score. Herb, what's good out there, man? How are you?
I'm excellent. I'm excellent, Grody. How y'all doing?
We are doing well. Tell us what has moved you so far at Hallis Hall with all sorts of moving parts occurring for the Chicago Bears right now.
Yeah, big news on what is usually an off day of a Tuesday like it was. But a lot of things were going on. Obviously, the news with Tyson's concussion and then you get Scott Daly coming back as a long snapper. And so there's a lot of things that are kind of going on around this team as they get prepared for a really big and important football game on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. We just wrapped up a press conference this morning with Coach Johnson.
How is the Bears’ quarterback situation shaping up for the Monday night game against the Eagles?
And, you know, he says right now they don't know. who the starting quarterback is going to be. He says, what we do know is that Case Keenum is going to be the guy taking the practice reps today. And so signs are pointing to Case Keenum making his start, which will be his first three years he hasn't had a start. And so Coach Johnson said they feel good about it. He says they're blessed to have the quarterback run that they have, where they have three guys who have played and won football games in the league. They don't think that they'll be limited very much if Case Keenum is the guy or if it's Tyson Bajan. Again, he says he doesn't know who it's going to be, but they feel good about it. He says, at this point in his career, Case is like another coach on the field, just talking about the conversations that he and Case have about game planning and offense and what things should look like.
He wants to ask some questions about the fact that Case Keenum doesn't get a ton of reps regularly. with the first team offense throughout the summertime. But Coach said I've called a lot of practices for Case. I'm comfortable with him. I don't feel like there's anything that he can't call with Case in the game. And so they're moving forward as though Case will be the guy. But he says right now they just aren't sure.
Well, and I think that's the part where we're trying to figure out. There's Ben Johnson who is doing the right things as a coach and speaking as a coach would about having to use his backup quarterback and somebody else has to step up. And then there's kind of trying to see the details. What did you think about his tone, Herb, and just how he said everything?
Yeah, I think I'm starting to get pretty well versed in what I like to call Ben Johnson's speak, right? And so, like, certain things you just kind of hear him say, and I don't feel like he's lacking confidence about what they can do in terms of their game plan going into this week. You didn't really sense any feeling that – He feels like they're going to be limited. Maybe, you know, he's just trying to convey the right message for his team and doing so through the podium. And that's fine.
