Who is Kevin Fishbain and what is his role covering the Bears?
Kevin Fishbane, Bears beat writer for the Athletic.
They know how much skepticism everybody has about their ability to rush the passer. They know how much criticism their GM has gotten for not adding a big-time pass rusher this offseason. So, you know, there's a chip on their shoulders. And, you know, now they have the opportunity to prove themselves because this is it. Like, these are the guys.
Kevin Fishbane talking Bears. Matt Ebert, Bruce George, McCaskey, Ryan Poles, Kevin Fishbane. On Chicago Sports Radio.
104.3 The
Score.
It is Rahimi and Grody on 104.3 The Score. Olin Krutz texted me and said, no more Wayne. Protect yourself. Sorry, the texters were egging me on. What
can I tell you? Some were not because it's always split. It's been a weird day on the text line. Some guy tried to tell me I was fighting with him and I was like, I don't know you.
You are listening to a four-season heating, air conditioning, plumbing, sewer, and electric football Friday presented by your local Ford dealers in Advent. We always love having Kevin Fishbane on to talk about the Bears. And you can see Kevin if you'd like. Kevin is joining us on our video stream to watch Search the Score Chicago on Twitch and YouTube. Fishbane, what's going on, man? How are you? I'm great. Happy Friday.
Look at that Northwestern polo. Are you ready? You ready for the season? You ready for
it? Football season, Grody knows this. I try to wear a little purple on Friday to the office. It's a little tradition among the alums. Just get hyped for Coach Prime coming to town tomorrow night.
Yeah, and Coach Braun got the reported extension. Times are good.
Yeah, new stadium in two weeks. They're 1-0. They beat the number three team in the country in the FCS. So, you know, we're feeling good.
I like what you did
there. That was perfect. All right, Fishbane. I spent time. You wrote a very lengthy, insightful article, which I read this morning in The Athletic, about those words, completion percentage. And Caleb Williams was successful in that regard through one week at 72.6% against the Panthers. What else have you uncovered about completion percentage going forward with Caleb Williams from some of the discussions that you had? Share with the class, as my guy Steve Rosenblum would say.
Yeah, Mark, this was a bit of a summer project for me because I've always been fascinated by the idea that if you are inaccurate when your football career begins, there's a theory that you'll never be accurate. I think we kind of had that thought sometimes watching Justin Fields when he first got here. And there's a laundry list of college players here. or NFL players for myriad reasons that just haven't gotten their completion percentage to where they want it to be after a tough start. And Josh Allen's kind of the unicorn. Now, as I started kind of diving into the story of a summer, one little nugget somebody passed along to me was like, well, go look at those quarterbacks and see how often their playbook changed.
Go see how they performed in college. And you might see that Caleb Williams is maybe a little different. And you go through them, and there's so many guys who had coaching changes, which Caleb Williams had, and so many guys who also weren't accurate in college. But Caleb Williams was decently accurate at USC. So I really wanted to kind of understand it. And one of the things I came to learn from talking to Ben Johnson about it, talked to Press Taylor about it, talked to Ryan Poles about it, was they just put such an emphasis – on ball placement all spring and all summer and caleb williams bought into that idea that even when you're just throwing routes on air you're just throwing to receivers with no defenders they are still grading all of those passes because they want a runner's ball they want the ball put perfectly so you can catch it and go and to the point where ben johnson told me he said caleb would get frustrated with himself
if he had an inaccurate pass in those periods, those early periods of practice, he was getting hard on himself because he wanted everything to be perfect.
