Rahimi Harrison-Grote. Middays 10 to 2. On 104.3 The Score.
This is Rahimi Harrison-Grote on 104.3 The Score. And that is Stronger by Daft Punk, which is an excellent way of putting our next topic. It was last night during the Cubs and Braves game when we were watching the broadcast that Elyse Medeker had a really good nugget She's on sideline last night. She was the field reporter out in Atlanta about Pete Crow Armstrong and how he's getting in shape.
Just when you think Pete can't get any stronger and faster, that's exactly what's happening. You know, coming in to spring training, I just thought Pete looked bigger to me. He just looks, like I said, stronger. And so I talked to him about that. This is the highest weight that he has ever been. And he's holding the weight, too, which is really important. So he's right now playing more around like 193, he told me, whereas last year he was in the 180s. There's a couple of things going into that. One, his diet, that he is now, say, like eating breakfast, which he said he never used to do before. And he's also totally adjusted his weight room routine. He said last year he would lift maybe like once a week, and now he's lifting two to three times a week.
So he's working hard. with assistant strength and conditioning coach Mark Weissman a lot.
What insights did Elyse Medeker share about Pete Crow-Armstrong?
And all of this suggestion goes back to Caleb Williams. I asked him just about that relationship, and a lot of what they've talked about or what he's observed about Caleb is the recovery, the weight room. He's like, I mean, you look at those guys' necks, and they're huge, which is so true. So a friendship that can help in a lot of ways.
Caleb Williams, the gift that keeps on giving. He goes to the Cubs game. They end up coming back in Caleb Williams-like ways. Here he is helping out PCA with the weight gains, the gains. Help PCA get swole.
Why do I picture PCA, Caleb, and Matas Bezelis all walking around town with their shirts off, just all... like over puffed their faces are huge and their necks are massive and there's veins popping out all over the place because caleb williams weightlifting plan bro you gotta lift two to three days a week man
Well, Caleb has said on the Ahmed Ra and Equimania St. Brown podcast that quarterbacks are supposed to carry a little more body fat than, say, your receivers and your running backs.
To take the hits, I assume.
Because they were messing with him about that. And then he's like, hey, hey, I'm not doughy. This is what you're supposed to do as a quarterback.
Yeah, no, Caleb, look. Caleb, he's a bigger quarterback. You know what I mean? Like, just a little puffier. A little puffier. Not Puff Daddy. You know who I don't need to be a little bit puffier?
I don't think he's out of shape at all.
How has Pete Crow-Armstrong changed his training and diet?
I don't need Pete Kronstrom to be out here getting puffier or bulkier. And the one thing that I keep going back to is I expect it because he is looking at a 308 on base percentage right now, which would be a career high, by the way. So what is the first thing you think of when you think of PCA on the bases more? You think of those stolen bases. But right now, the clip is a little uncomfortable because he's already been caught three times stealing. I don't know if you guys remember the caught stealings. They were a little slow. I was like, PCA's faster than this. At least in the field he's faster. I feel like his speed is on display as an instinctual center fielder more than they have been this season anyway, understanding he has stolen nine bases and he's been caught three times.
He's on pace to get caught double-digit times. That's something that has not happened in his career. So I'm concerned a little bit that if you're worried about getting stronger and bigger, that might slug it down a little bit on the base pass specifically.
Yeah, I could see where that would be an issue. And I know that before they increase the size of the bases, the only thing that really mattered to the run game in baseball was what was a pitcher's time to the plate? How many seconds between pitches?
