What insights do Matthew Bailey and Joe Barna provide about Illini football?
David Alano, the junior out of Naperville, Illinois, in Naperville North. This for back-to-back bowl wins for the Illini. And Illinois walks off Tennessee. David Alano with the winner.
Ah, yes, the Music City Bowl against Tennessee that the Illini came away victorious. We actually have two key members of the team that helped in that. Joe Barna and Matthew Bailey joining us here on Rahimi, Harris, and Grody. That call courtesy of ESPN. Joe and Matthew are part of Illini Night, which I joke is just fun to say. Like Illini Night's a great thing to say. It's joyful, Marshall. It's joyful to be around.
Illini Night, the celebration of the Illini, and also the celebration of the Cubs. And also, we have a first-time Wrigley Field guy in the building with us here, and Matthew Bailey.
Congratulations.
If I told you it's your first time at a professional sporting event, and it just happens to be a Cubs game, and we're going to give you extra duty, privilege, however you want to expect. Tell the people what you're going to be doing at tonight's Cubs game.
Tonight, I will be singing the seventh-inning stretch with Coach B.
How many of there are you singing? And then, Joe, you get to throw out the first pitch, so we'll come back to you in a second. But the singing thing, Coach has done his solo, and he has a great singing voice. I was so surprised. How many of you guys are singing with him?
It's just me, just me tonight. But he did it last year with Luke, and that was the first time doing it with a player, and so he chose me to do it this year. Do you feel pressure?
Tell me what's going through your head right now.
I had to definitely practice a couple of times because I didn't know it was like at every baseball game because I didn't grow up baseball. But my grandpa was a huge Cubs fan. And so like seeing that video, him and Luke doing it last year, it was just it was cool to see and practicing for it. It wasn't like it's pretty short. So I'm excited.
it you say that now but marshall and i did it last year really you do have to maintain focus i can see that that that i think you will do so you're a moline native and we were asking you uh a little bit of questions off microphone in our in our commercial break your grandfather was a cubs fan and the quad cities that's kind of a place where you get a little bit of everything there baseball wise like what made you make your decision
Honestly, like, meeting all of my friends, I feel like, were Cubs fans. And so, like, with my grandpa, he always had his Cubs hat on. My mom loved the Cubs because of my granddad. And then, like, having all my friends, like, it was just all I knew. Like, I feel like everybody was talking about the Cubs from where I was from. And so that's what kind of just led to me being a fan of them.
Okay, so Matthew's got big things planned. He's seeing the seven things stretch at his first ever, I mean, first ever professional baseball game, basketball game, football game. You haven't done it. Then we've got Joe and Joe Barnett. Listen, you didn't play baseball growing up, but you're throwing out the first pitch. That's right. How do you prepare for such a mission?
I feel you can't overthink it. You know what I'm saying? I haven't practiced too much. But you did practice in some shape, form, or fashion. Throwing a couple balls. But I feel like you can't let the moment get too big, or else you're going to ground that bad boy. But I'm super pumped.
And I know you are a lifelong Cubs fan. What did you tell your friends and family, and how nervous are you?
I wouldn't say I'm too nervous, but I'm just super excited. You know what I mean? Like I grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, about 35 minutes outside of Chicago. And like you said, lifelong Cubs fan. And when I got to tell them, they were pumped.
How do the players feel about their first experiences at Wrigley Field?
So I got a big posse pulling up today.
Okay, so how many people are you bringing? Who's coming to support you?
All my family. I'm bringing some of my friends. And I know a lot of kids from my high school are going to be definitely are going to be there.
