Chapter 1: What are Elon Musk's recent financial milestones?

3.271 - 28.283 Ray D'Arcy

$839 billion. What would you do with all that money? Well, if you want the answer to that question, you have to ask Elon Musk. Forbes have come out with their list of billionaires, American billionaires, and he's top of the list. He's the richest man ever anywhere, is Elon Musk. $839 billion. I'm looking to build a showroom out in the back garden there, some sort of garden room.

0

28.704 - 54.22 Ray D'Arcy

Elon, would you give us a few bob alone? He wouldn't miss that, would he? He wouldn't miss that. His net worth skyrocketed by half a trillion dollars from last year, thanks to a rise in the value of Tesla and SpaceX, which is aiming to go public in 2026. And he's the first person ever accorded to reach the 800 billion mark as he moved towards becoming the world's first trillionaire.

0

56.613 - 91.075 Ray D'Arcy

It's a mad, mad world we live in that one man is worth 839 billion. He could buy Ireland. a number of times over, and yet there is so much poverty in the world. And then I see Donald Trump has increased his fortune by 27% to an estimated 6.5 billion, thanks largely to crypto dealings and his New York fraud penalty being thrown out. He's ranked 645th in the world, and I hope that he hasn't

0

91.055 - 121.995 Ray D'Arcy

used his position as President of the United States of America to increase his largesse. Of course he has. Of course he has. It's all about him. Anything he does is about him. And he doesn't see beyond that. And that's the unfortunate thing, that a man like him is in charge of... Of America. Anyway, who were the newcomers into the billionaires list? Dr. Dre. Hey, couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

0

123.239 - 155.874 Ray D'Arcy

Beyonce is now a billionaire, as is Roger Federer. Our Maraid is a big fan of Roger Federer. You know, he has monogrammed towels and monogrammed this and monogrammed that. See, that's the sort of thing you do if you were worth 839 billion. You'd have everything monogrammed. Loom paper, monogrammed. Towels, monogrammed. Serviettes, monogrammed. The dog, monogrammed. Yeah.

157.536 - 178.649 Ray D'Arcy

I'll just look at the list. I suppose, you know, Elon Musk is a businessman. He made his money over many years in tech companies and all that sort of thing. It's probably more difficult to become a billionaire if you're in the entertainment industry. So I looked up the list of entertainers and sports people who are billionaires in America. And top of the heap is Steven Spielberg.

178.669 - 209.131 Ray D'Arcy

He's worth 7.1 billion dollars. And he's been doing what he does for a long time. Close Encounters, E.T. And right up to Hamnet. He's a producer on Hamnet. And we're looking forward to Sunday. And our Jesse Buckley. Fingers crossed. You just worry, don't you? Because everybody's saying she's a shoe-in. She has to win it. It's going to happen. And then you go, oh, no. Imagine the disappointment.

209.191 - 238.994 Ray D'Arcy

Anyway, that's happening on Sunday night, the Oscars. Who else is in the top 20 when it comes to entertainment people? Well, there's Beyonce, new in at 21. Sorry, Dr. Dre's at 22. Jerry Seinfeld is worth 1.1 billion. Tiger Woods, 1.5 billion. Kim Kardashian, 1.9 billion, just for being Kim Kardashian. Oprah Winfrey, 3.28 billion. She's worth 3.28 billion. Michael Jordan, 4.3 billion.

239.214 - 243.743 Ray D'Arcy

Do you know that movie Air? It tells the story of how his mother negotiated the contract.

Chapter 2: Who are the new billionaires mentioned in the episode?

459.599 - 482.678 Ray D'Arcy

I can't remember why I didn't get it in the end. It had been refurbished. And it was sort of ideal for my needs. Probably not geographically correct. Didn't buy it. But the selling point on that was that it was the first house at Gayburn. So, 5 St. James's Terrace, Clonsky Road, Dublin 6. As stayed in by Taylor Swift. I'd say she played the piano as well. It's a mahogany piano.

0

483.118 - 497.184 Ray D'Arcy

Beautiful looking thing. It's in the front room. I don't know if they call it the good room. In the Haw household, it's the front room. And I'll give you a description. So the front room, home to the piano placed by one of the windows overlooking the terrace.

0

498.006 - 521.85 Ray D'Arcy

The space exudes comfort and luxury and high ceilings adorned by elaborate cornicing and a chandelier and substantial black velvet sofa and chairs that you could happily sink into. while a certain songstress serenaded you with the tune. There you go. That paints a picture. Billionaire, Taylor Swift. If you're in the market for that. Still on music, great to see this.

522.211 - 548.766 Ray D'Arcy

20th Century Paddy, the songs of Shane McGowan, will be out on the 13th of November. And the first track from that was released overnight. I might cheekily play a little snippet of it before the end of the podcast. It's Bruce Springsteen's version of Rainy Night in Soho, that brilliant song. And to celebrate that, Bruce Springsteen has written quite a long essay. It's in praise of Shane McGowan.

0

549.387 - 564.604 Ray D'Arcy

I'll read you a bit of it here. These are the words of Bruce Springsteen. Shane's voice was so deeply real, profane and honest, his writing so flashing, alive and historically rich, its genesis appeared as a mystery to all, including, I believe, its creator.

565.377 - 589.012 Ray D'Arcy

Dangerous joy, the glee and courage, the humour in the face of fate, the wild ramble of a life driven towards the artistic heavens and the daily balm of self-obliteration. Shane was all naked, bottomless humanity. Shane was all naked, bottomless humanity. And it goes on and on. And I'm going to read that in its entirety.

589.313 - 611.035 Ray D'Arcy

I'm just looking at the number of people and the type of people who are involved. Tom Waits involved, Steve Earle involved, Libertines, Primal Scream, Jesus and Mary Chain, Lisa O'Neill, Damien Dempsey, duets, Hosier paired with Jesse Buckley. Wow. I wonder what they're singing. I hope they're singing Haunted. I do hope they're singing Haunted. Johnny Depp, Imelda May.

613.219 - 640.078 Ray D'Arcy

Who will get the job of doing Fairytale New York? That's a bit of a poison chalice, isn't it? Many have tried, all have failed. And I suppose you could say that of all cover versions of Shane McGowan songs. He wrote them and he sang them in his own way, his own inimitable way. Probably spurred on by his naked, bottomless humanity, as described by Bruce Springsteen.

640.218 - 651.371 Ray D'Arcy

Anyway, it's on sale in November. There'll be a lot more about that in the months to come. And the good news is that the Dublin Simon community, a charity working with the city's homeless population, will receive 50% of the artist's royalties.

Chapter 3: What makes Steven Spielberg the richest entertainer?

652.712 - 675.444 Ray D'Arcy

20th Century Paddy Album. And well done to Victoria Mary Clarke. for putting all that together. Shane's spirit and songwriting are eternally exalted through this glorious collection. Each song is uniquely and graciously interpreted by these beyond beautiful artists and his family are humbled by and thankful to each and every one of the musicians involved. They probably have the listing already.

0

675.464 - 704.96 Ray D'Arcy

I should go and find that and see who's doing Haunted, if anybody is doing Haunted. Ronnie Delaney. Ronnie Delaney died at 91. He just celebrated his 91st birthday a couple of weeks ago. And it's 70 years ago this December that he won the 1500 metres at the Melbourne Olympics. And I've met Ronnie over the years a few times and he came into us about 11 years ago for a chat.

0

704.98 - 730.328 Ray D'Arcy

And it was a delightful chat. He's just one of those gentlemen, old school gentlemen. And he was never tired of talking about the experience of winning a gold medal and everything that happened after it. He was 21 when he won the gold medal. And it was in the Melbourne cricket grounds. The MCG, which had a capacity of 120,000 spectators.

0

730.649 - 752.555 Ray D'Arcy

Now, I don't know if it was full on December 1st when Ronnie won his gold. I would imagine it was because that's the sort of the premium event, isn't it, in the Olympics, the 1500 metres and the 100 metres event. So they were all in the stadium for that, I would imagine. Anyway, we spoke to him 11 years ago and this is available in the RT archive.

0

752.575 - 780.939 Ray D'Arcy

Just put in Ronnie Delaney, Ray Darcy and you'll find it in its entirety. But I'd remembered Ronnie from my childhood days and we used to do this thing. Did you bring it? Can I see it? Is it real? And that was supposedly about Ronnie Delaney as he toured the country with his gold medal. And people go, did you bring it? Can I see it? Is it real? So I asked him about that. Is it true?

781.12 - 788.069 Ray D'Arcy

Because when I was a child, there was a story going around about you. And it was always, you know, did you bring it? Is it real? Can I see it?

788.59 - 799.044 Ronnie Delaney

Yeah, I think that was the nad I did. Oh, it was the nad you did, wasn't it? Yeah, and I was asked the other day, what was the ad for? So the power of advertising, I don't remember. I was rather embarrassed.

800.806 - 817.003 Ray D'Arcy

He thinks it may have been for some dairy product back in the day. But if you do know, do let us know. Ray at DarcyDaily.com. Nice ring to it. And anybody who would have heard him win his gold medal live would have had to listen to it on longwave.

817.523 - 839.822 Ray D'Arcy

And in a book written about Ronnie Delaney, Tony O'Reilly, I don't think he was a billionaire, but definitely a millionaire, Irish rugby player, owner of the Irish Independent back in the day. He wrote an intro and he describes listening to the commentary on a long wave radio. And this is what it would have sounded like. You'll have to strain your ears now to listen to this.

Chapter 4: How did Ronnie Delaney impact Irish sports history?

2177.632 - 2179.995 Gina Daly

I think eventually. I think eventually we did find the leg.

0

2180.075 - 2186.34 Ray D'Arcy

Now, there's another story that does the rounds that the Dublin football team celebrated one of their victories in Rainbow Rapids.

0

2186.36 - 2202.515 Gina Daly

Well, you see, Mick Holden, who was one of my dad's best friends. I think people would know Mick Holden, the most amazing Dublin footballer. And he was manager. So he was a manager there. So all the lads would always come down. Yeah, Brian Mullins, all of them. Yeah.

0

2203.416 - 2223.822 Gina Daly

We once also had a birthday party and the famous thing was that my aunt managed to go down, this is before health and safety, went down the whole of the Rainbow Rapids. I think it was the green slide with the gin and tonic in her hand and didn't spill. Didn't spill one drop of that gin and tonic. Landed in the pool with the hand up.

0

2224.004 - 2227.107 Ray D'Arcy

Did somebody set her that challenge or did she set it for herself?

2227.127 - 2237.057 Gina Daly

No, she just was like, hey, let's just go down the green slide, which was the fast one. The green slide was the fast one. I went down with her gin and tonic, with her hand raised and got into the pool and didn't spill it.

2237.077 - 2239.059 Ray D'Arcy

There is a movie in it. There's definitely a movie in it.

2239.079 - 2259.844 Gina Daly

There could be. And there was like love there because people who were working in Rainbow Rapids, they met. Yeah. We had so much crack, so much crack working there. And a lot of my friends in school in the summer then, we all worked there. Brilliant. And then used to go out afterwards, which was, we were underage, but we used to go out afterwards. It was the 80s.

2259.864 - 2275.483 Gina Daly

There was a lot of health and safety issues. There was a lot. We used to eat our lunch at the top of the slide while pushing people down the slide. They'd go down with a bit of coleslaw on their back. Sorry, your grant. Yeah, it was great. Great one.
