What is the story behind Kyla’s “Happy, Thank You, More, Please” mantra?
I'm Sheila Shoiger and Ready to Be Real is back with a brand new series. And my first guest is comedian and now author, the one and only Kyla Cobbler.
We are cyclical people as women. We go through cycles and we should respect those honour those cycles. And we're not in a position in society to be able to do that. We have to fucking power through everything. We're not meant to power through. Yeah. Nature doesn't power through. Nature goes through spring, summer, autumn, winter because things need to die and be reborn and regenerate and replenish and we're not given that opportunity and we need to.
We spoke in Galway at the beginning of September, just as her new book, Happy Thank You More Please, was released, and it's already topping the charts. In this conversation, we talk about where those five simple words came from: her experience of school, the wonderful relationship she has with her mom, finding healthy love with her husband Simon, and learning to believe in herself even when she feels absolutely mortified. We also get into womanhood. Honouring ourselves, beauty standards, aging, and taking up space. I absolutely loved this conversation and I think you're gonna love it too. Let's go. Let's start with the title of the book because the such a lovely story.
Yes. Happy Thank You More Please. Basically the title was Brought into My Life. So I always say I can't credit it. I think it's quite a said expression in the gratitude world, but It came into my life in the Anglers Rest, which is a very bougie pub in Carground. I know. Well. Uh I when I worked there, it was not as bougie. It was a little bit of a country pub. And I had just got back from Australia and I met an Australian man that fell head over heels in love. That as you do at 21. That kind of 20-year-old 21-year-old love where you're like, I mean, this is it. Yeah. I've met him. This is I'm done now. So I came back, I was head over heels, couldn't make heads or tails of the situation, very insecure, very uncomfortable with not, you know, him not texting.
And I was riddled in anxiety. And I met a my friend Erica, who was in the year above me in school. She had just got back from Thailand, I think. And she had come back very wise and just had gone on a beautiful soul journey. And she was like, you know, to get out of this funky You just need to start appreciating the good stuff and I was like, Yeah, but I do, I do. She goes, No, but you need to like acknowledge it. And she was like, So I always use the term happy, thank you, more please. And I was like, What do you mean? 'Cause it just sounded so To be such a magic thing in my mind now, it sounds so basic when you say it, you know. And she was like, Just means that you're happy for what's happening. Thank you.
You say thanks for it happening. And you take a little bit more of it. And I was like, Yeah, I suppose. And then she was like, For anything though, like the Anglish Rest is you've got to cross the road to the car park and it's like this little country this little country lane, like this little country road where people bomb up and down and trying to cross the bloody road would be a nightmare sometimes. So if we got across the road to the car, we'd say, Oh, happy thank you more, please. Happy Thank you more, please. And then it just became It just became such a Like an affirmation. And also I didn't even know what affirmations were then. Yeah, sure. You know what I mean? It was just words I said. And I talk about prayer a lot.
Like my mom grew up in a very Catholic household, and prayer was a big part of our lives. And a lot of people in Ireland, you know, we pray in school and pray before lunch and everything else. And although I'm not a part of the church, I do miss I like prayer. Yeah, I like the repetition of prayer. I do. Yeah, I think it's lovely. I really believe very strongly in words. I think Rumi said the word. Words we speak at the house we live in. Yeah. And you believe how we speak about each other, about ourselves, what we talk into existence. So having Happy Thank You More Please, which is such a basic, easy term or phrase.
