Uh this session we've got Rowan Cook, uh the education officer for Enviro NZ. So Rowan, what's your top tip?
Right, well uh I've got a couple, but I'll put put in context first. So just the big thing is uh these are recycling tips, but always looking um to reduce and reuse before recycling.
What are Rowan Cooke’s top tips for reducing, reusing and recycling?
But if you get to that point, um big thing is for your recycling, put it in your bin loose, so not in a bag, not in a box, just tip it in loose. Um And if you are involved with some young people who are maybe going out to live in a student flat or, you know, independent living for the first time, or you're a landlord, help set up a sorting system inside. It's nice and easy if you can do it at source. So there's not just one rubbish bin that everything goes in and then some poor person has to walk outside and decipher which goes in the recycling. Which goes in the trash. Yeah. Yeah.
How can you set up an effective sorting system for students and renters?
You know, that kind of thing. Um so yeah. Uh loose loose items and a sorting system inside.
Do you find that it's uh been easier for those like I guess those students in particular now that it's been standardized, the curbside recycling?
I think it will get easier. H hard to know at the moment because it's just you know, it's not that recent that it happened. Mm. But um yeah, it is it even in my messaging I can say, It's just where you're from, you know, it's the same as that or Yep, it's the same as that, but you're from Christchurch.
Why is putting recyclables loose in the bin better than bagging them?
But so your glass just the only difference is your glass goes in a glass separate glass thing. So yeah, yeah, it I think it is going to be and it is um easier for me to message because it's the same as where they came from.
Yeah, and I think um some of the things that we do with um sorting it at the source is um really important.
Yeah, absolutely. Our glasses s really good.
