19 years old, in college, has sales, will she drop out with Lila Zimmerman Episode 182
04 Mar 2016
Chapter 1: Who is Lila Zimmerman and what inspired her entrepreneurial journey?
This is The Top, where I interview entrepreneurs who are number one or number two in their industry in terms of revenue or customer base. You'll learn how much revenue they're making, what their marketing funnel looks like, and how many customers they have. I'm now at $20,000 per top. Five and six million. He is hell-bent on global domination. We just broke our 100,000-unit soul mark.
And I'm your host, Nathan Latka. Okay, Top Tribe, this week's winner of the $100 is Rick Siegmund. Rick Siegmund. He is stuck brick and mortar business.
Chapter 2: How did Lila grow her Instagram following to 15,000?
That is his focus. So congratulations, Rick. If you guys want to win $100 every Monday on the show, in order to enter, simply subscribe to the show on iTunes now and then text the word NATHAN to 33444. Again, text the word NATHAN to 33444. Okay, Top Drive, coming up tomorrow morning, you'll hear from Jules Hill.
He's a startup chief operating officer who leaves after the startup 500 accelerator and only left with 1% equity. Okay, Top Drive, good morning, good morning. I'm here with my mocha this morning, and you're gonna love our guest. In fact, you might recognize her name. Her name is Lila Zimmerman, and this is Sue's daughter, and she is just on a streak.
Chapter 3: What strategies did Lila use to monetize her Instagram account?
I can't wait for you to meet her. She's a 19-year-old college student from Boston, Massachusetts, and is currently a sophomore at the University of Maryland. Her passion for health motivated her to create an Instagram account to share her lifestyle. Eating a plant-based vegan diet has helped her with so many benefits, both physically and mentally, along with eating healthier.
And it really is easier than you may think, she says. She hopes to inspire others to enjoy the power of eating clean. Lila, are you ready to take us to the top?
I am ready, Nathan.
I am excited that you're here. And I actually do think you are the youngest guest we've ever had on.
Chapter 4: What is the significance of the 'Share for Share' technique?
So this is exciting because people always ask me to go younger.
Very exciting.
Okay, so tell me first things first. Why did you really get into this thing? And what exactly is it? Is it a product? Is it just a lifestyle you're sharing? What is it?
So it really is a lifestyle. I wouldn't say it's a product, but Instagram is a place where I can share and market other people's products.
Chapter 5: How does Lila drive traffic from Instagram to her website?
So in that sense, it's a product. But other than that, I have created a recipe e-book. So that is something I promote through my Instagram account.
So let's talk Instagram numbers for a second. When did you launch your account? How many days did it take you to get 1,000 followers? And how many are you at now?
So I launched my account the summer of 2014. And to get to 1,000... It took me probably a year, but I didn't start taking it seriously until like six months in.
Chapter 6: What are the details of Lila's e-book and its sales performance?
And now I'm almost at 15,000 followers.
Wow. And is there any, what specific strategies did you use to grow that? Obviously the content's critical.
Yeah. So the content posting more frequently, two to three times a day, quality photos, good hashtags, and also interacting and networking with other accounts on Instagram.
Okay. And are there, you know, we've had some folks on before. I don't know if you know Nathan Chan with Founder Magazine. Have you heard of him?
Chapter 7: What challenges does Lila face balancing college and her business?
No, I haven't.
No. Okay. So he came on in an episode and basically chatted about how we found these things called share to share group or share for share. Is that a thing? And if so, have you used it?
Yeah, when I first started growing my account, I definitely use that. It's a great tool because if someone else has an Instagram account that's similar to yours, they have the same target audience. And if you share one of their photos, they share one of yours, you automatically gain followers.
Okay, so break down the psychology there.
Chapter 8: What are Lila's future plans for her brand and business?
Is there a listing somewhere, a URL people can go to to find people who have said, yes, I'll participate in a share for share?
There isn't a listing that I know of, but it's kind of more of a DM type of thing. So if you see an account that you like that... has a similar target audience, then you can send them a direct message and ask or vice versa.
Got it. Got it. Okay. That's helpful. So you grew your account and then walk me through what's the call to action. You have a great website, freshfitandfearless.com, which we'll link to in the show notes at nathanlatka.com forward slash the top 182. Those of you jogging this morning or on your way to work again, just remember forward slash the top 182. So Lila, you've got a website.
I imagine you're using Instagram to drive traffic there. What call to action? How are you getting the traffic from Instagram to your website?
So right now, the one link in my bio is directly to my recipe ebook, which brings you to my blog. But I'm also driving traffic. If I post a recipe on Instagram, then I'll change that one link in my bio to link directly to the recipe.
Okay.
Now, okay, okay, so that's helpful. One thing I'm able to do, I don't know if you know I'm able to do this or not, but because your Bitly link in the, and this is a tip for you guys, actually, I do this all the time for reverse engineering other people's funnels, the link in your bio is actually a Bitly link. So I can just add a plus on the end of it and actually see the statistics.
So it looks like you've driven from Instagram to your website well over 2,267 clicks just since... let's see, since about August. So what did you do? I mean, there's some spikes in the traffic, like on August 21st, it went up to 44 clicks or 106 on August 22nd. Do you remember? Did you do any launch strategies or anything on those dates?
Possibly through my mom. She sometimes gives me shout outs on Periscope or on her Instagram, but I occasionally will promote it on Instagram.
