We've got Phil Nadal joining, who is Barbara Corcoran from Shark Tank. He is her business partner in VC. So he breaks down what Barbara Corcoran looks for in new deals. Heck, maybe he'll invest in your company.
Chapter 6: How did Joseph manage manufacturing and production for his bags?
Good morning, everybody. My guest this morning is Joseph May. He's the founder of the Bretton Company. Now, he launched this company last year in 2016 by running a Kickstarter campaign for the Modern Day Briefcase. Prior to the Bretton Company, he worked as an attorney at a couple of different law firms and director of operations and in-house counsel at a company called Freshly Picked.
Joseph, are you ready to take us to the top?
Chapter 7: What are the financials behind Breton's product pricing?
Yes. Okay, good. So tell us about this idea. So what were you doing at Freshly Picked and why leave a cushy legal job to go in and start your own company?
Well, the legal job, I guess they're cushy, but they're no fun.
Chapter 8: What growth strategies is Joseph implementing for Breton?
And so that's kind of, I just, when I was at Freshly Picked, I just found that I really liked to create products and be a part of the design process. And I had this idea for this backpack when I was traveling in Italy working and And it just kind of kept bouncing around my head. And I learned a little bit about Kickstarter. And the original intention was just to launch it in the morning.
So I'd get up at 4.30 in the morning and work on designing this product and work on kind of starting this company. And then it kind of got to the point where it was a great time for me to leave. It was great for Freshly Picked for me to leave. It was great for me to leave. And so I was just like, well, I'll try it. Let's go for it.
And how old were you when you left? How old was I? 33. Okay, 33. And what salary did you give up at Freshly Picked?
What salary? I was in the 70s.
Okay, got it. 70, 80K?
I think so. I can't remember exactly. It was in that range, but it was in that range.
I always like to get into the psyche of kind of where entrepreneurs' minds were when they made the decision to do their own thing. So you were giving up a salary. Are you married? Do you have kids? Yeah, I have kids. I have four kids. Wow. Okay, when you launched the company, you had four kids. Yeah.
Dude, so you must have had, your wife is going, you can't do this unless we have this much in savings, I imagine. Or did you just really go all the way at it? Nothing in savings, four kids, and you're going to figure it out as you go?
Well, so, I mean, basically what was happening at Freshly Picked is they needed a better operations person. They needed, like, I'm a trained attorney. I'm not, I don't have the operations skill set. And they found someone and it was just like, they didn't need me around anymore. And so it was like, okay, I can go get another job and kind of start over a new company or I can just try this.
