Stepping up to the open hotel room door, I raised my hand to knock, but paused at what I saw. A woman in tight jeans, bending over as she tucked the bedspread under the mattress. I took a moment to enjoy the view before knocking on the door. The woman straightened, startled by the noise. Her ponytail of onyx hair whipped around as she looked over her shoulder at me and did a double take.
I smiled, knowing I was easy on the eyes. She was pretty. Brown sugar skin. Lively, mahogany-colored eyes. One of the rare women who looks better with a wide face than a narrow one. No ring on either of the important fingers. Yes, she asked, after taking me in. A slight Hispanic accent, which only made her more attractive to me. I'm Trevor Hawkins. Okay, she said. The new desk clerk. Davila set me up so you can give me a rundown on readying the rooms, in case I have to do it sometime." Oh," she said. Right. Okay, well, come in. I'll show you." Her name was Carla, and she gave me a speedy rundown of what she called flipping a room. Everything you need is there," she gestured at the loaded down cart in the hallway.
Room 413 is OOS and hasn't been flipped yet. You can do that one. Let me know when you're done and I'll come look.
How is Trevor introduced to working at the century-old hotel and who are the key staff he meets?
OOS? I asked. It means out of service. The AC needs to be fixed before we can book it. It's perfect for practice. She gives me a skeleton key. An actual physical key, not a card. Okay, thanks. I held eye contact with Carla for a long moment. A look of impatience came over her face. You need me to hold your hand or what? I smiled. No, I got it. Turning, I headed several doors down to 413 with the key in hand. I would see what needed to be done before returning to the cart. The hallway was narrow compared to modern hotels. Off-white walls, dark gray paneling, bright white doors, ancient light fixtures at regular intervals with high wattage bulbs, which threw enough light to fight against the darkness that seemed like the hall's natural state.
The muted design on the maroon carpet made me think of Kubrick's The Shining. I pictured Danny riding down the hall on his tricycle. There was no elevator in the historic building, but if there had been, it would have been easy to imagine a torrent of blood pouring from its slowly opening doors. I unlocked 413 and stepped into the dark room. As I felt for a light switch, my eyes landed on the bed. Someone was in it, half under the covers on the far side of the mattress, their head hidden by two stacked pillows. I'm so sorry, I said, giving up on finding the light switch. I thought this room was… I lost the ability to speak as my gaze locked onto the person's left hand, which lay outside the covers.
It was swollen and rotten, to fingers like moldy sausages. Déjà vu slammed into me from behind, and I was suddenly walking forward, just like I had two weeks ago. The stench roiled my stomach, worse than the dumpsters at my old restaurant job after a long summer day. Angling toward the foot of the bed, I brought the person's face into view. Their putrescent, discolored, festering face. My grandmother's face. Same tangle of unruly white hair, same fluid-stained white nightgown with little blue flowers on it, same shrunken lips and blackened cheeks, same eyelids open to reveal an irregular, bruise-like dark stripe across each eye, backed by the violent red of burst blood vessels. Dismay flooded me, along with fear, my heart squeezing like a worn-out stress ball.
No, I pleaded in my head. I thought I was past this. I thought I'd put it behind me. An item I had been carrying around in my pocket since my grandmother's death seemed to grow warm. I barely noticed it as I slammed my eyes shut, saying the same things I'd told myself a thousand times since her death.
