"He admits he's changed his approach" | Ross Lyon's new media strategy (21.05.26)

Chapter 1: What changes has Ross Lyon made to his media approach?
Are you aware of the fact that Ross Lyon has decided that he wants to change the way that he conducts his media and press conferences? I certainly was not. I've missed all of this. What's going on? Okay, this is Ross on Triple M admitting he has to change his approach.
Look, the grand rules have been set for pressers. Sit there, answer questions, don't engage back, and walk out. That's easy.
So have you changed your approach, Ross, to press conferences? Yeah, I have. Has that been involved with conversations with people at the club? No, I don't need people to tell me what the ground rules are that have been set.
Okay, so this is how he used to conduct himself before that. This is our old favourite quirky Ross.
Chapter 2: What are the new ground rules for press conferences set by Ross Lyon?
A little bit concerned they're chock full of talent, aren't they? The AFL Nepo baby. I sleep pretty well. I handle the pressure okay. Chris Fagan was here watching in person, so he's not breathing out, is he? He's got two cups and he's rolling up, eating a Subway. Been a lot of noise apparently, but... It doesn't come up on my algorithm, right? So I'm not really across everything.
Played really good footy Q1. Played really good footy Q2. Taken away from us in the CSB. They dominated the CSB. Yeah, so it was CSB.
Okay, that's when he used to feed the chooks. This is the new, I wouldn't say improve, Ross, yesterday.
We're up for the fight. We're looking forward to the challenge. We're looking forward to the audit.
Chapter 3: How did Ross Lyon's previous media style differ from his new approach?
It's a great stadium. Yeah, it's sort of Friday night. Both teams off a five-day break, which is nice to have a bit of sameness in that. So, yeah, it's an exciting match for us, to be honest.
Which one do you prefer?
I prefer the quirky one.
Why do you think he's getting a bit jaded? It'll come back, won't it? I don't think he'll be able to help himself at some point. I think it's just in there. And I think he'll try and suppress it for a period of time. But I just think that it's like the cuddly Ross. You know, when he first started down there in St. Kilda, it was all cuddly, cuddly, cuddly. Well, the real person emerges eventually.
There's an authentic Ross. And I think we need to see the authentic Ross. Yeah. Yeah, I think so too. But if he's getting in a situation where he's turning up at those presses and he's ā didn't he have a little episode there a week or so? He got asked some questions that perhaps didn't quite hit the mark.
Of all the things you did, as is in the coaching landscape, where does it ā fronting up to a press conference, either mid ā did you do it mid ā you would have had to have done it midweek, but also after a game, where does that sit in at all? It was a necessary part of the game, but it wasn't necessarily the most enjoyable part of the game. Right. And you had to front up.
And I think the most difficult thing is that if you're losing week after week, then it's very hard to- stand there and come up with something new or different or interesting about the way that you've performed. I mean, you're on the back foot the whole time, but I think somebody like Ross has been around a long time. He's like Chris Scott.
I mean, they see the questions coming a mile away and they gear themselves up and they decide which way they want to take it and when they're going to have a bit of fun with it or not. Who's the best? Who's the best in it? I think those two are the best. I think those two have been the best over a long period of time, Ross and Chris. I
There's nothing these two blokes don't know about what's going on in the game, no matter how they pretend. Oh, I haven't heard that. Where was that? That's far short. They're tuned in. They're plugged into everything. And if they're not, they've actually been worded up by the media person at the football club as well.
