What does Andrew Russell mean by “preliminary finals pressure”?

Garry Lyon 0:00
Great week in football this is. What it is, it's a great week in football. You could tell some stories about some stories that have been told in uh football clubs too and themes along the way. But we're just talking before about a theme at Hawthorne. This came through. I'm calling bulldust on the oar. It's a broomstick for the wizard. Nice
Garry (host) 0:19
touch. Did you I don't know if you heard that story, but the Hawks had with uh drawing some inspiration from a book called Um The Boys in the Boat. It's about their midfielders who are a bit low profile. These boys won a an Olympic gold medal as underdogs. Did you was Clarker a big themer or who w the coaches that you played under? Who were the big themers?
Andrew Russell 0:37
Clarko was a big theme. And look, coaches pull this stuff from wherever they can, you know, like and so I I would believe that they would be doing that. Did you have
Garry (host) 0:48
to know your players? Like there'd be I know that there are some players, and in fact I know A very successful senior coach who just rolls his eye. Rolls his eyes every time I start to talk about themes and, you know, what about this? And he just rolls his eyes and go w so he clearly has got no interest in it, but that's okay. It th he's been successful, so it was work for him. But there are others who are grabbing onto everything.
Andrew Russell 1:10
Well I think The play the coach comp is going to come from two or three different angles going into a game. And so the theme is going to apply for thirty, forty, fifty percent of the players. Some players love the theme and they buy into it and the story and they you can see them get completely, you know, drawn into the story, whereas others are literally up the back thinking, Well, what the is this bloke talking about? He starts talking around stoppage setups and then they come alive. That's all they want to know is well, how do we actually win the game? Yeah, no it is. It is.

How do coaches use “theming” to motivate players in finals?

Andrew Russell 1:38
I mean we used um uh in oh four we used um El Garouge, um the theme 'cause he'd lost the last two Olympics and and you know we had finished on top three years in a row, oh two, oh three, oh four and Brisbane were a dominant side, so they won when it mattered at the end of the year, so we felt like we'd failed, we'd failed, we'd failed, and then this was our time, you know, to win. Is that
Garry (host) 2:00
a Clark O?
Andrew Russell 2:01
No, that was uh Choco. Oh,
Garry (host) 2:02
Choco,
Andrew Russell 2:03
so that was a that was a Choco one. So um yeah, look, you know, Clarko's a theme man. Yeah, he l he loves it.
Garry (host) 2:09
Would you have been a theme player whispers or not?
Garry Lyon 2:11
Oh hundred percent, hundred percent. And uh yeah, I went with a couple of very sharp themes in my coaching at St Coolder too. What did you go with? I can I just say and this is no criticism of you because we're all different, Gary. Me. But if if I was preparing a theme for you, I would have to get very quickly to the point of the theme. If the th if that didn't reveal itself in the second sentence, then you you were drifting off and there was no way no that I was gonna get buy in from you.
Garry (host) 2:39
What I'd say it goes that goes back to the cell. That's it that's n in the cell. And Luke Beveridge, you know, is would he be the number one themer?
Andrew Russell 2:47
Yeah, Bevo Bevo. I I did a bit of work um the start of the year with the Bulldogs and when Bevo s he started this season with the theming of the season and we did this um challenge out in the bush and he brought it back in and he sold the whole theme of the whole year to the playing group uh and he and he tested it on a group of staff and a group of corporates who went up there first. Tested the theming, ran it by him and then he did it with the players three days later. But oh look he doesn't he love a theme.
Garry (host) 3:18
Hey, we'll take a break. On the other side you can tell us about preliminary finals. You've been involved in twelve. Six of them were decided by less than a goal.
Andrew Russell 3:27
