When I was growing up My best friends. And the time had An orchard in their garden. And When I say in orchard, I mean Really big orchard like Maybe. Twenty thirty apple trees. Uh Think they had some grapes somewhere? I mean It was the first interaction I'd ever had. With an orchard. The first time I saw her. Um

How does Andrew describe the childhood orchard that shaped his early memories?

Andrew Bond 0:59
And it was all Really impressive, really um. Incredible. I Dinway. Grow up in a crazy fancy house. I mean it was It's nice and I, you know, feel very grateful and privileged for the upbringing I had, but You know, you can imagine if your friend has a th a thirty tree orchard in their garden and Um, they've probably got a lot of land and The house is is probably quite big as well. Um So Kinda different. Um Yeah, really impressive for a young kid, but Even still. I don't think I Appreciated. The fact. Nah. I spent so much time there growing up and how Lucky I was, really. At the time. To Be able to spend time. In a place like that. With her very dear friends. It uh It enabled. Us to have Those kinds of childhood memories that feel like
Andrew Bond 2:25
They come out of a film, you know. Camping out in the middle. Of the trees. A flickering light. In the middle of the night. Telling ghost stories. It felt really Magical. Um No. That orchard is gone. Um the house is gone, even. Um my friends. You know, they grew up. They moved away. I'm still in contact with them to a degree. Um, which is nice. Because I knew them a long time ago. And I'm starting to discover that it's actually quite rare. To be in touch with friends. For a long time. Some I do feel really lucky to have. A number of friends that I've known for Over twenty years. But I'm still in touch with. But like I say Um The whole Land that the house was on in the garden in the orchard is um. It's now like a small housing estate.
Andrew Bond 3:49
That gives you any concept of the size of the place. Um it's about I think four. Four or five houses. Don't In the space. Where? Their home used to be. Which I imagine is quite Strange. For them, I think A few years back I asked if uh It had ever gone back. To see what it was like there. And um And it was only one of them I was speaking to, but It was a brother and sister, by the way. And they said. No. Because they felt like It would be too weird. To see you. They're home. Their family home, the home that they grew up in. To be so Radically changed. And I can understand that. Absolutely. I have since been Being back to the edge. Of that estate. Um It's almost as if The house there. Never existed. In a way. It's really strange. To see.
Andrew Bond 5:15
But I suppose Things like this are apt to change. Through our life. All the more reason why We really were lucky to have that space while it was there. And the memories. That we have. That space because Memories are all that is. I have to wait. And it makes me wonder a little bit. Thinking about The orchard. The orchard that was and The orchard that now isn't. And kinda the difference between change and growth. No. Because I wonder If the Is perhaps a connotation. Not Things changing in life is things Going on. As they should do and that a change. Is kind of inextricable. To some kind of growth. But I don't know. If that's necessarily always true. I don't know if The world grew. Four. That orchard. Bingone. Having said that. Now in its place sits.
Andrew Bond 7:04
Several homes that could fit families. Who may have not had a home otherwise? Possibly. Or perhaps Have found Their dream home. Their Family home. Which contains You know, five times as many Precious memories. And Who am I to say that those are Less precious. And I guess you could call that growth. Or you could just call it carrying on, in a way. I don't know that change is always growth, I guess, is what I'm trying to say. Sometimes change can just be change.
