Chapter 1: What are the hosts' initial thoughts on The Devil Wears Prada 2?
Hello and welcome to Shameless, the pop culture... Keep it. Happy Monday! It was almost like the sound of pecan came out of my mouth. It was pecast. Not an AI podcast. Oh, the pop culture podcast for smart people who love dumb stuff. You're joined, as always, by Melbourne writers Michelle Andrews, that would be me, and Zara McDonald, that would be you.
Hello, Michelle Andrews, and hello, producer Eilish Gilligan. Hey. Happy Monday, you guys. Coming up on today's show... Let's be real. We thought we were pushing it when we did a whole episode on The Devil Wears Prada 1 a couple of weeks ago. We were not pushing it. It's actually one of our most popular episodes of the year. It is. Then we all went and saw The Devil Wears Prada 2. Not Spawn.
Not Spawn, not Spawn, not Spawn. Just vibes. Yeah, and I wasn't expecting this to happen. No, none of us. We're as shocked to be here as you all are.
But I left that cinema and I thought, I wonder if I'm going to have a hard time pitching to Michelle and Eilish that not only do I think I preferred this to The Devil Wears Prada one, I now want to do an entire review of this movie. So we are here, the three of us, to do a review.
Chapter 2: How does the box office performance of The Devil Wears Prada 2 compare to its predecessor?
And it didn't take much convincing for either of us. It didn't take convincing. And I have never in my life been stricter with off mic chatter. I have not uttered even a word to either of you about this film.
I haven't added anything. Gil told me she liked the scene where Meryl Streep said she liked working.
Okay. You two need to stop breaking the rules. The listeners give us their time. The least we can do is give the listeners the organic chat. Well, it was quite funny. You weren't there. Gil and I tried. And do you know what happened?
Do I have a soldier out there? You have a soldier. Who was my soldier? Who threatened to text.
Oh!
Oh, Rhiannon Joyce. Belly. Belly. Miss Belly. Belly was like really mad and was like, I'm going to Michelle. Good.

Chapter 3: What criticisms have emerged regarding the film's portrayal of characters?
I had to tell someone.
Tell anyone but Zara McDonald. We have a spot every week to discuss this shit. It's literally in our calendar. It's how we all get paid every week. The least you can do is save it for the fucking listeners.

Just letting you know that up top. Well, you couldn't love anything in this world more than you love the Devil Wears Prada one. Including my daughter. Yeah.
Yeah.

Chapter 4: How do the hosts feel about the character development of Miranda Priestly?
I love the Devil Wears Prada one more than my daughter.
I don't think that's controversial.
No, no, no. As far as films are concerned, Devil Wears Prada won. Absolutely top of the tree. I love it so much. I had a high bar to clear when it came to this film. And I don't regret going. I definitely don't regret going. No way. This film did not clear that bar at all. It was a fun night. I'm glad I spent that ticket money with Mitch.
We're going to get into the why, but before then, shall we get into the how it's doing?
Okay, yeah, box office. So The Devil Wears Prada 2 has- May I take a sip of water while you do this? Go for it. Has already made $233 million. That's USD. Sorry, Donald. Thank you. Worldwide. So it made that in its opening weekend alone. If we're talking AUD, we're looking at $323 million. That's according to The Guardian.

Chapter 5: What role do celebrity cameos play in The Devil Wears Prada 2?
Apparently, it cost $100 million to make. So, I mean, you need to factor in marketing costs, yada, yada, yada. We're doing very fucking well. Yeah.
Marketing costs for this would have been pretty astronomical, as you say. But that is incredibly strong results from the first weekend. As per The Guardian, women made up about 76% of the ticket buyers, according to post-track exit polls. 74% said they would definitely recommend the movie to friends. Does that stat feel about right to you when you're in the cinema?
Yeah, because I think a lot of people saying, well, I recommend it. It's like, well, it's It's like the Devil Wears Prada. I was going to say the female male split in the cinema. Oh, sorry. Yeah, I would have actually thought maybe slightly more men because I think a lot of couples would have gone along. I went with my partner. You went with your partner.
Yeah, I took my partner and he hadn't seen the first one. So we had to do a very quick synopsis in the car.
It's an easy like date night movie. Yeah, it is. Really easy date night movie. This was the best opening weekend for any Meryl Streep film ever. That's obviously a remarkable achievement. She's 76 years old.

Chapter 6: How does the film address contemporary themes in the fashion industry?
She's been in so many Hollywood hits. It was also Emily Blunt's biggest opening weekend too with the film besting Oppenheimer's premiere.
Anne Hathaway, Gil? I didn't see anything about Anne Hathaway. It's her biggest film. Yeah, this is what I'm wondering.
Well, just to pause on this, that's a pretty big deal, not just the Meryl Streep one, although I guess you could potentially argue that in many ways Meryl Streep has been a critically acclaimed actress and that has been her strength over the years. But Oppenheimer, given the Barbenheimer of it all, that's a huge deal.
And I think what's interesting is when this film was initially announced a year or two ago, I think I had a raised eyebrow and wondered why all of them were going back to do it. And it felt at the time, a year or two ago, like maybe none of them had anywhere else to go. I don't know. I think sometimes I find a sequel 20 years later a bit like... the easy option.
This was clearly the critical and commercial success option.
I'm convinced as well that all of the big stars would have had a very generous cut of the royalties, I think, from this film. I think the financial upside to Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep. Well, they pushed it hard. Yeah. Anne Hathaway's biggest box office opening, would we like to know? Would love. The Dark Knight Rises.
That film easily cleared over a billion dollars worldwide, not in its opening weekend, but in its box office run. It's one of the biggest films of the last 15 years. That kind of makes sense.

Chapter 7: What are the hosts' final ratings for The Devil Wears Prada 2?
And I loved it when I saw The Dark Knight Rises.
And I did know this. And it is in Shameless's pop culture Venn diagram. Okay. Again, we won't be going over rehashed ground, but it is interesting to me that Vogue are continuing to champion this film. We spoke about it a couple of weeks ago that we were pretty intrigued about how much content about The Devil Wears Prada they have created.
They have continued to create more content about The Devil Wears Prada than I thought humanly possible. And what I am finding more interesting is the fact I still want to consume it all.
Yeah. I'm probably a bit tired now.
Okay.
That's okay. Yeah. Of them leaning in. Yeah, maybe. Maybe of Vogue just leaning so heavily in. I think I felt that even the last time we spoke about this. I'm like, okay, I get it. I get it. I get it. We're beating a bit of a dead horse now. After the break, we're going to tell you what critics are saying about the movie because I think some agree with me and some agree with you.
No, I don't think many agree with me.
But first, a word from today's sponsor.
Mish, if you are young and healthy, chances are you're not rushing to have a meaningful conversation with your family about the end of your life, should the worst happen.

Chapter 8: What discussions arise about a potential third installment of The Devil Wears Prada?
Or you might not have even considered something like registering as an organ donor.
Well, our friends at Donate Life are encouraging us to pause and think about it. They've shared some really interesting stats with us about organ donation, which is one of the easiest and most vital decisions we can make right now.
Just one organ donor can save the lives of up to seven people and transform many more through eye and tissue donation. Sadly, though, only one third of Aussies have registered, even though it only takes a minute to sign up.
But if more young and healthy people register now, we can shift those numbers. Through this, I've learned just how important it is that you tell your family.
Yes, speak about it with your family because in Australia, your family is always asked to agree to donation and most families will agree when they know it's what you wanted.
You could be the reason someone gets a second chance at life. If you are over 16, registering takes one minute on the Donate Life website or through Medicare.
Thank you so much to Donate Life for making this episode of Shameless possible.
Okay. Critics. Critics. What I'm seeing on my feed, which might be different from what you're seeing on yours, but I am seeing people say it was more intricate or slightly more complex than the first.
I agree with that. Oh. But I don't watch The Devil Wears Prada for intricate, complex storytelling.
