Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

5.009 - 25.207 Unknown

Thanks for tuning in to the Goals on Sunday podcast. As usual, lots to talk about. VAR had a good day, but are the referees waiting for VAR to make a decision at Stockley Park before they make one? We discussed that on the show with Sean Wright-Phillips, who was a top guest, Alex.

25.347 - 43.867 Alex Scott

He was a top guest, Cammy. Yeah, Sean McPhillips is in the building. Sean, we were just saying before that it's been a year since I last saw you when we were at Wembley, the FA Cup final last year. But wait, you didn't tell me you had retired then, but was it in the process?

0

44.328 - 53.6 Shaun Wright-Phillips

Yeah, I was trying to basically just drag it out for as long as possible, because I know once you say it, realistically, there's never really any going back. So I stretched it out as much as I could.

Chapter 2: What are the highlights of Shaun Wright-Phillips' career?

54.3 - 58.426 Unknown

Just on the montage there, we saw you doing the robot. Did Crouchy nick that from you?

0

61.59 - 64.233 Shaun Wright-Phillips

Well, I wouldn't say he nicked it, but I definitely did it first.

0

64.894 - 66.616 Unknown

Oh, right. Crouchy, you nicked it.

68.56 - 72.185 Alex Scott

Wait, so what have you been up to since you've announced your retirement?

72.225 - 93.893 Shaun Wright-Phillips

I've been doing a lot of stuff with Manchester City because I'm part of the Legends Club with obviously Micah and Paul Dickoff. So we've done a lot of work in the communities and obviously representing the games with the partners. And I've been starting with a lot of media. I've done a bit for BBC and quite a bit for Sky as well at the minute. What did you say? No, don't repeat it!

93.873 - 99.12 Chris Kamara

It's alright, Kami, you said he's here all day because after us you're going on to more programmes, aren't you?

99.18 - 106.15 Shaun Wright-Phillips

Yes, I am. After this I'm with Football Social as well. Staying in your house today, Kami.

106.17 - 113.62 Alex Scott

Do you think some of those Liverpool players were feeling a little bit of pressure going into that game? Obviously, three losses.

Chapter 3: How did Shaun Wright-Phillips transition from retirement to media work?

265.603 - 277.356 Unknown

Chris Wilder's old school, isn't he? He said, look, if you don't like it, don't come to this football club. It's just when Jose does it, everyone says, oh, he's throwing him under the bus and he's, you know, shoving the blame aside and blaming other people.

0

277.977 - 282.582 Alex Scott

And players like Phil Foden, should he be looking to get a start today in the derby?

0

282.602 - 302.431 Shaun Wright-Phillips

I think after his performance, of course, he deserves a start, but everybody knows... the position he's in and he chose to stay and fight, which I applaud him for because he's getting his chances. And when he does get his chances, he seems to either pull out a man of the match performance or get on the score sheet or get an assist. But I think in the game, they've got a lot of games coming up.

0

302.451 - 304.675 Shaun Wright-Phillips

So for me, he should be looking at a start today.

0

305.616 - 312.728 Alex Scott

Let's just actually talk about your former team Chelsea and obviously Frank Lampard. Did you ever think that he would go on to manage Chelsea?

312.843 - 333.329 Shaun Wright-Phillips

I never thought he would get the Chelsea job at the time he got it. But playing with him and seeing the type of person he was, you could see that that was a step that he wanted to take. Obviously, it might have come sooner than he expected. But when chances like that come up, you can't turn them away. And I think since he's taken the job, I think he's done tremendous with the situation.

333.349 - 340.538 Shaun Wright-Phillips

He took the job in and he's brought back loads of players that hadn't even played in the Premier League yet. And for me, they've done really well in that first year.

340.518 - 345.929 Alex Scott

Let's take it back, because obviously you started at Forest, then got your move to City as a YTS player.

346.27 - 361.581 Shaun Wright-Phillips

Yeah, correct. I got released from Nottingham Forest for being too small and not good enough. City gave me, like, I think it was two games to obviously impress. And after that, they pretty much signed me. And then it just kind of happened in the space of like a year.

Chapter 4: What insights does Shaun provide on Manchester City vs. Liverpool rivalry?

578.729 - 580.832 Alex Scott

So did they come to you and say, OK, Sean?

0

581.232 - 593.793 Shaun Wright-Phillips

They had to sell me, basically. I didn't know at the time, but the club was in a bad situation at the time that I left, and that obviously would have helped them in that situation. So they had to accept the offer basically.

0

594.755 - 603.923 Unknown

You must have rang people, you know, your dad or whoever for guidance and he must have said like, you know, I've moved a million times, just get on with it and do it.

0

604.375 - 624.695 Shaun Wright-Phillips

Yeah, but the connection I had with the fans, all the stuff around the club, and we used to do a lot of stuff in the community. So I'd always do the Christmas panto every year. Even though I was shy back then, I would still go on the stage with the kids and have a laugh and stuff. So there was all things like that at the time that was just going to get taken away from me.

0

625.175 - 646.045 Shaun Wright-Phillips

So it was like having to start again almost. The lucky thing was when I went to Chelsea at the time, there was a few players that I already knew. They helped me settle in pretty quickly, but walking into the stadium with dad and obviously my agent at the time, He was just like a big kid. Dad was just laughing and giggling. And I'm just like, I'm quite a laid back person.

646.125 - 665.891 Shaun Wright-Phillips

So I'm just going with the flow. And he just looked at me and said, well, son, why aren't you smiling? Ain't you happy? I said, yeah, I'm happy. I just don't need to act like you, basically. And I always remember it. And he was just so happy at the time. But after signing there and getting settled with the boys, I'll never regret anything about it.

666.172 - 669.836 Unknown

I've got to ask you about the panto quickly. Was it Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?

670.858 - 671.018

LAUGHTER

672.061 - 674.665 Shaun Wright-Phillips

There was a few of them, but that would have been one.

Chapter 5: What was it like for Shaun to play under José Mourinho?

819.486 - 833.281 Shaun Wright-Phillips

I feel like if the manager told you to do something called, this is how we're going to play, that's just what you went out there and done. Whereas now I just feel like in certain aspects, if the bigger players don't want to do that, it feels like they don't put that all in, if that makes sense.

0

833.321 - 856.612 Shaun Wright-Phillips

Like if you go back to his time at Man United, where he got the sack and then Solskjaer comes in, the same 10 players go unbeaten, 10 games in a row. It doesn't really happen like that. For a player, you're not going to just lose and then all of a sudden think, all right, cool, he's gone now. But it seems like in this day and age, that's how much players have.

0

856.873 - 863.241 Shaun Wright-Phillips

They have a lot of power and a lot of say. If they get the dressing room, things can go difficult for managers, in my eyes.

0

863.423 - 871.12 Alex Scott

Talking about dressing rooms, actually, because I read an interesting story. You moved back to City and then Rubinho came, but you said he was such a character in the changing room.

0

871.521 - 890.465 Shaun Wright-Phillips

Yeah, him, Alano and Joe De Silva would go in before a game and they would get there like maybe... 10 minutes before everybody else. They would already be changed in their kit. They would set up their own little head tennis court in the changing rooms, or they would just be doing kick-outs.

890.485 - 907.699 Shaun Wright-Phillips

But I'd have, like, Brazilian samba music on, and they would just be dancing around, playing football in the changing rooms. That was kind of like... they're warm up and they're, all right, it's time, it's game time now. Let's just kind of get loose sort of thing. And that's basically got them up for the game. Like it was so cool playing with them.

907.739 - 910.904 Shaun Wright-Phillips

They brought something different to an English dressing room.

911.445 - 921.662 Alex Scott

And then now, so following on from your footsteps, obviously your son plays at Manchester City, but he's on loan at Blackburn at the moment. Is he going to go on to be the new you?

921.642 - 947.621 Shaun Wright-Phillips

He's going to go on to be better than me, I think. Well, I hope he does. But yeah, he's doing really well. The Blackburn move is something that he actually wanted for himself. He wanted to go out and play a lot more games and obviously showcase what he's got. And I was at this game on Friday on the 6th and just watching him play, I told him after the game, Look at this spring.
